European elegance is a decor in its own right. But what constitutes this style ethos? Some say it’s the subtle balance of old and new. Perhaps it’s the reinterpretation of European design traditions made relevant for today. Or maybe it’s a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ achieved through composition, texture, volume and light. We say it’s all of the above.
Who better to show us the way than the modern-day queen of European refinement herself- Swedish designer Louise Liljencrantz. Providing a lesson in classical, yet contemporary grace via her trademark use of texture, colour and objects Liljencrantz has built an impressive portfolio full of luxurious spaces (take a peek at her own home previously featured on est here). Far from stuffy, her projects play with layered, rich materials and the placement of beautiful, interesting pieces to create an easy sense of old-world glamour.
Atollo 238 Lamp
A luminous sculpture to say the least. Nothing even comes close to the recognition this lamp gets. Earning itself iconic status over the years, the ever-elegant Atollo 238 lamp was designed by Italian Vico Magistretti in 1977 and is available from Euroluce.
Lacanche Cluny Oven
No European kitchen is complete without a Lacanche oven range. Hailing from the French Burgundy village of Lacanche (aka the heart of food and wine) since the 19th century, these are serious cookers built in the spirit of a long tradition of craftsmanship.
Cognac Glasses
Staying true to the Northern hemisphere tradition of a wee tipple, these cognac glasses by Normann Copenhagen (available at Great Dane) combine function with pure pleasure.
Alanda Coffee Table
Italian designers B&B Italia produce this iconic glass and steel framed piece as a homage to 80’s architect Paola Oiva. Not only is the Alanda a functional coffee table it also doubles as a glamorous sculpture. Available at Space Furniture.

Never underestimate the power of the humble decorator cushion. We love the classic square design of King Living’s Faye cushion in a buttery leather with its pinched edges and hidden zip.
