Editor Alice Lines explores where luxury and economy meet: in a low-emission, high-tech, chic new ride.

In association with Lexus.

I’ve always had a thing for the way of life in Japan — the traditional arts and crafts, the architecture and gardens, the pop culture, and technology. There’s a lot to admire about the harmonious blend of ancient traditions and modern innovation you’ll find there. Japanese sensibilities are deeply embedded in the values of Lexus too. Omotenashi – an ancient concept that describes one’s ability to anticipate the needs of another, even before they arise – is a guiding principal at Lexus that filters through their vehicle design and driving experience.
Back in autumn, Lexus invited me on a mini-break at Te Arai Links to introduce the latest addition to their fleet — the first-ever LBX. It was during this trip that I first grasped how deeply omotenashi is ingrained in the brand (you can read about the trip over on homestyle.co.nz). This winter, I had the chance to drive the LBX around Ōtautahi/Christchurch, integrating it into my weekly routine with surprising ease.

MAIN IMAGE & ABOVE Available in three different ‘moods’ — Active, Relax, and Cool — LBX establishes a new identity for Lexus that reinterprets their famous spindle grille and pairs it with a muscular, aerodynamic form. I drove the Active mood, and while it may not be my usual aesthetic, there’s something quite fun about the sporty, high-energy styling. Mostly though, I appreciated the feeling of control in the driver’s seat.

As a sub-compact SUV hybrid crossover, the LBX showcases its value by packing maximum luxury and efficiency into a small-scale design. This ensures lower emissions and greater fuel economy, which became more and more obvious as I tackled daily commutes and errands. Manoeuvring the LBX to meetings or the gym was effortless, and it managed tight parking spots like a pro during weekend sports runs.

Reflecting the multifaceted culture of Japan, the LBX is crafted from high-quality materials and excels with its innovative technology. An intuitive infotainment system kept me connected, while advanced driver-assistance features provided added safety. Despite its compact size, the LBX delivered a deluxe driving experience where every detail felt thoughtfully considered.
Driving around Ōtautahi was a joy, each journey demonstrating Lexus’s commitment to blending luxury with practicality, much like Japan’s seamless integration of tradition and modernity into daily life.
