It’s no secret that I (and every other DIY blogger) love DIY projects involving polymer clay — it’s such an easy material to work with and the results are always beautiful! Take for example these DIY Stacking Clay Bowls that were inspired by watercolors. I stumbled upon this pretty technique when I was squishing leftover bits of clay together and saw the colors blend together into a dreamy watercolor effect. Who would have thought clay could be so subtle??
These cute yet functional stacking bowls are perfect for keeping your clutter in check and holding your keys / bobby pins / paper clips, etc. In my ongoing quest to get my workspace more organized I think I’ll be getting a lot of use out of them. The best part? If you don’t need the extra organization at the moment, just stack ‘em up and tuck away these stacking clay bowls to use later. Next time, it would be fun to try combining multiple colors and see what that looks like!
Materials
– oven-bake polymer clay, various colors
– circle cookie cutters, 4 different sizes
– rolling pin
– small oven safe bowl
Directions
1. Roll a piece of white clay in your hands to form a snake-like coil. Repeat for another color.
2. In the palm of your hands, combine the two colors together by rolling it into one ball of clay.
3. On a clean work surface, use a rolling pin to flatten the clay to about 1/4 inch thickness.
4. Then take the flat piece of clay and fold it roughly into itself again. It doesn’t have to be perfect — we want the colors to blend together in a natural way.
5. One more time, use a rolling pin to flatten the clay to about 1/4 inch thickness. Blending the clay colors together in this way will create a soft watercolour effect.
6. Once your happy with the look of the clay, use your largest circle cookie cutter to punch out a circle from the clay.
7. Place the circle of clay into a small oven-safe bowl to create a soft bowl shape.
8. Bake the clay in the oven-safe bowl according to package instructions. (Tip: I baked mine at 200º F for 10 minutes.) Let cool completely.
9. Complete steps 1 through 8 with smaller cookie cutters to create set of stacking bowls.
