Ahhh, scratch n’ sniff stickers. I remember as a kid, trying to be super good at school just to get one. They would smell of artificial cherry, strawberry, and lemon with nothing but a simple scratch to activate the smell. I don’t know how they make those, but I do know that whenever I open up a box of cake batter, or powdered gelatin, I get the same smell. So in having this nostalgic moment, I decided to create a scratch n’ sniff DIY, simple enough for little hands.  Instead of stickers, I decided to make bookmarks.  I mean, who wouldn’t want to open up their favorite novel and smell chocolate, or strawberry flavor? So, if you want to go back in time with me and make scented bookmarks, follow along!

For this DIY, you’ll need:

  • Sweet Treats Printable
  • Flavored instant pudding, kool-aid, gelatin, or cake batter (all in powdered form)
  • Liquid craft glue
  • 1/2 teaspoon
  • 1/4 teaspoon
  • Twine

First, print and cut out the printable. I printed mine out on card stock, but I actually suggest a paper with some shine to it- a glossy finish, like photo paper. Photo paper will also hold up a bit better in the long run, too.

Make the mixture of 2, 1/2 teaspoons of flavored powder, 1/4 teaspoon of water, and 1/2 teaspoon of glue. Stir, stir, and stir, until you get a thick paste. Ideally, you’re trying to mask the smell of the glue and paper with your flavoring. That’s why you add more powder than anything else. Play around with this formula if needed, and tweak it to your liking.

It looks yummy, but no eating!

Scratch n' sniff bookmarks gluing

Attach your twine at the base, connecting the two.  You can use the regular glue for this step.

Spread the mixture on the back side of the printable.  Stick to the center of one side, so that when it is folded over, the mixture doesn’t ooze out of the sides. Before folding, put a little more craft glue on the base of the popsicle, so that its stem will stay closed when folded.  Finally, fold the printable together, let dry, and you have your popsicle bookmark!

Where is the scent, you say? The scent will not be very strong with this formula. You’ll want to play around with the mixture to add more or less flavoring to enhance or dilute the smell.  But you should smell the flavor when finished, and there’s actually no scratching required! Try this with other flavors like cherry, vanilla, or lime. The flavor possibilities are endless. I haven’t tried the cake batter mixture yet, so I’m curious to smell that one. There’s nothing like the smell of freshly mixed, yellow cake batter.  Well, I hope you guys enjoyed this post, and I hope your kids like it too! Happy DIY!
