DIY Christmas table decoration

This is such a simple DIY Christmas table decoration but it still looks so pretty and festive. Once made, you can display it anywhere you want a festive touch. You can use it as a table centrepiece for your main Christmas meal or display it on any tabletop or shelf. You can also display it on your entryway table to give your guests a Christmassy welcome the moment they walk through the door.

I’ve made this Christmas table decoration with an IKEA bowl as I thought the shape and size of bowl was perfect but you can use any shallow, round bowl you have.

Materials:

IKEA bowl
acrylic paint or emulsion/ latex paint
baking soda
dried moss (US readers here) (I used dark green and a pale misty white)
large candle
pine cones (US readers here)
velvet ribbon

I decided to paint the glass IKEA bowl as I prefer a ceramic or stone look rather than glass. While glass can be beautiful it can sometimes look a little cold and I wanted a soft and warm look to the decoration. But this is of course optional.

Mix your paint with around half a teaspoon of baking soda. This will add texture to your bowl, making it look more like ceramic. Paint the first coat and leave to dry for at least one hour. When completely dry, paint one or two more coats as needed. For the second and third coat, I used only paint and no baking soda because I didn’t want to over-do the texture.

Once completely dry, tie a bow around a chunky candle and place it in the middle of the bowl. Scatter some moss around the bowl till it’s full and place a few pine cones on top.

While I used dried moss, you can use any other foliage like Christmas tree clippings or pine stems or really any greenery you have. And you can also use a scented candle to make the decoration even more festive.

I especially love how the bowl turned out — it’s hard to see in the pictures but it does have a stone like finish. And once Christmas has passed, you can re-use the bowl to make a centrepiece for any holiday like Easter or Thanksgiving.
