were tasked with reinvigorating an existing ’90s home in Sydney’s by introducing natural light, a contemporary layout and a refined palette of materials.
Despite its , the homeowners expressed a desire to deviate from a typical beachside aesthetic, instead opting for an elegant home filled with sophisticated furniture and art. co-director Jo Lawless emphasises the immediate impression of “lightness and tranquillity” upon entering the home – a sentiment shared by the inhabitants who played an influential role in shaping the final design outcome.
The marble-clad kitchen island echoes the colours and forms of sand dunes, connecting the home to its coastal locale. The space also features light-oak cabinetry, track lighting, and appliances and the .
The main living area, once lacking in natural light, is now bright and spacious thanks to thoughtful reconfigurations and the expansion of the windows. The area is lined in lime-washed oak floors and enveloped by fresh white walls.
Recognising the inadequacies in the original layout, especially in the lack of natural light in the main living area, the design team orchestrated a spatial overhaul that prioritised light, openness, and a connection to the outdoors. Increasing the size of the windows became pivotal in drawing light into the home’s heart and enhancing the communal spaces’ functionality.
The material palette pays subtle homage to the home’s surroundings by incorporating natural lime-washed oak floors, fresh white walls and calming coastal-inspired natural stones. “The marble in the kitchen reminds me of the sand dunes, while the travertine in the bathrooms resembles weathered cliffs by the sea,” Jo says. “Our objective was to evoke the feeling of being by the coast rather than the look.”
The living room features the , , and Avon rug, as well as the .
In the dining space, the and are complemented by the muted tones of ‘Twofold’.
Lawless & Meyerson’s design approach, characterised by neutral interiors rich in texture and meticulous detailing, manifests in the curated selection of furniture, lighting and art. “We are always striving for understated spaces; they may have the best of everything, but they are quiet about it,” Jo says. Esteemed brands like , and find a place within Gamma Gamma, yet the interiors still maintain a sense of approachability and softness.
The essence of this project lies in the trust established between the homeowners and the design team. Jo underscores the significance of this trust, emphasising that great design is a collaborative effort, where the synthesis of ideas culminates in spaces that are not just well-appointed but also exude a quiet, understated elegance.
Lawless & Meyerson have dressed the primary bedroom in contrasting light and dark tones, with a custom bedhead made from stained timber veneer. The space features the and bedding.
