Crochet Easy Chunky Throw Blanket – Free Pattern

Cosy, chunky and topped off with tassels, the Sablé Blanket follows a one row repeat and a simple modified single crochet. The texture of this crochet throw pattern is created by inserting your crochet hook under an extra strand of yarn – that single strand makes all the difference!

Once I discovered this stitch, I absolutely feel in love with the texture! Groups of single crochets are stacked together to look like a chunkier version of Linen/Moss Stitch, hence the name Cluster Moss Stitch. I’ve created a full step-by-step photo tutorial and video tutorial of the Cluster Moss Stitch and once you’ve gotten the hang of it you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to crochet!

The Sablé blanket pattern has 13 different sizes ranging from lovey to baby blanket and all the way to a King bed blanket if you want a humongous throw! The sample in the photos is the lapghan size which is perfect for snuggling on the couch or as a gift to a loved one! You can also add chunky yarn tassels for a touch of whimsy or leave them off for a streamlined look ? It’s completely up to you!

Design Inspiration

Can you believe that this is my first blanket pattern ever?!? Every November I’m always so surprised that Christmas is right around the corner and then it’s a mad dash to crochet presents for everyone! The Sablé Textured Throw is a mindless project perfect for some crochet meditation during the crazy holiday season!

Sablés are my favourite French Christmas cookie and I’d highly recommend them – they’re similar to shortbread and so delicious! ? There’s nothing better than snuggling under a blanket with a plate of sablés and tea!

I know that a blanket is just a rectangle so it might seem a bit silly but it took me a LONG time to settle on this design. As much as I love snuggly things, you can only have so many blankets in your house before it becomes a bit much haha. I really wanted a design that could fit into anyone’s home, look neutral and modern but still be interesting (not just rows of half double crochet) and have amazing drape!

Dozens of swatches were made and I still couldn’t find something that I was in love with so I shelved this project and came back to it a few weeks later. Thankfully I finally discovered on a stitch texture I loved and was easy to crochet. What do you think about using the Cluster Linen Stitch in some other patterns?

Yarn

This chunky blanket project uses WeCrochet’s Wool of Andes Superwash Bulky which is a 100% wool yarn. The twist and fibre of this yarn create really defined stitches which lets the texture of the Cluster Moss Stitch shine!

I used the shade ‘Oyster Heather’ which is a stunning barley sand shade that is the perfect neutral beige! I find a good beige colour is so hard to find, as there’s often so many creams and tans but not many shades in between.

Since Wool of Andes Superwash Bulky is 100% wool, it’s super warm and long lasting but it won’t be as soft as a merino or acrylic straight out of the skein. To make this blanket and yarn as cosy as possible, I recommend wet blocking with a good quality wool wash and you’ll find that this yarn softens up beautifully!

Cluster Moss Stitch Pattern:

FOUNDATION CHAIN: Ch odd number of stitches.

ROW 1: SC in 2^nd from hook, *skip 1 st, 2 SC in the same stitch; rep from * until 1 ch left, SC in last ch, turn.

ROW 2: Ch 1, SC in 1^st st, *skip 1 st, CM in next st; rep from * until last st, SC in last st, turn.

ROW 3: Ch 1, SC in 1^st st, *skip 1 st, CM in next st; rep from * until last st, skip last st, SC in ch 1 (turning chain of previous row), turn.
*Working the last SC into the ch 1/turning chain gives this stitch a straight edge.

Repeat ROW 3 for pattern.

Sablé Blanket

FOUNDATION CHAIN: Ch 26(37, 77, 103, 108, 120, 115)(85, 144, 169, 230, 245, 275).

ROW 1: SC in 2^nd from hook, *skip 1 st, 2 SC in the same stitch; rep from * until 1 ch left, SC in last ch, turn.

ROW 2: Ch 1, SC in 1^st st, *skip 1 st, CM in next st; rep from * until last st, SC in last st, turn.

Repeat ROW 3 until ROW 34(58, 120, 138, 178, 160, 205)(157, 205, 309, 370, 370, 370) or you reach desired length.

Fasten off.

Tassels

*Make 4 (optional)

Cut 45 strands measuring 36cm/14” long. Cut 2 strands measuring 46cm/18” long.

Using one of the longer strands, tie bundle of 45 strands at the middle point of the 26cm/14” length. Fold bundle in half, with the tie at the top of the fold.

2.5cm/1” from the top of the fold, wrap 2^nd longer strand of yarn around the bundle. Tie a knot to secure 2^nd longer strand of yarn. Thread the tails of yarn through a darning needle. Insert darning needle through the middle of the tassel and down to hide the tails.

Use the strands of yarn at the top of the tassel to tie the tassel to the blanket. (You can use a darning needle to sew your tassels in place). Tie a knot and thread tails of yarn through a darning needle. Insert darning needle through the middle of the tassel and down to hide the tails.

Trim tassels and if necessary steam your tassels to straighten the strands of yarn.
