Next Wednesday, we’ll be launching our 50th issue. We’re honouring 50 of the most iconic homes to be featured in our digital magazine to celebrate this milestone. We’ve already revisited issues 20-29, followed by issues 30-39, which leaves us with issues 40-49, where 23 homes left a lasting impact. From a minimalist Belgian retreat in issue 40 to a Melbourne riverside home in issue 49, these homes have stood the test of time.
27. Knokke House by Nathalie Deboel
Belgian interior designer Nathalie Deboel was the cover star of issue 40 with her ‘Knokke House’, which featured a minimalist kitchen dressed in warm, coastal-inspired materials.
28. BS House by Vincent Van Duysen
In issue 40, we curated 40 kitchens that defined a decade of design, including Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen’s farmhouse-inspired ‘BS House’ kitchen in Zwevegem, Belgium.
29. My Space | Richard Christiansen
Australia-born, LA-based Flamingo Estate founder Richard Christiansen let est inside his eclectic, globally-inspired home in issue 41, which he designed in collaboration with French architects Studio KO.
30. At Home with John Pawson
Issue 41 granted us an exclusive tour of English designer John Pawson’s Cotswolds home, which we’ve recently brought to life in an exclusive, personal film tour.
31. Where Architects Live | William Smart
Australian architect William Smart’s Sydney home and workspace originally featured on the cover of issue 42, while also launching our ‘Where Architects Live’ film series this year.
32. Bilgola Beach House by Olson Kundig
In issue 42, we explored a home on the coast of New South Wales, Australia, designed by US architects Olson Kundig to sit in harmony with the landscape.
33. Mandeville Canyon by Walker Workshop
North American architects Walker Workshop’s ‘Mandeville Canyon’ project appeared on the cover of issue 43 to celebrate their recognition as part of our ‘esteemed 10’ for 2022.
34. Where Architects Live | Richard Found
Another iconic Cotswolds home – an updated 19th-century cottage belonging to architect Richard Found, enveloped by woodlands and a lake – appeared in issue 43, which we’ve also captured as part of our ‘Where Architects Live’ film series.
35. Can Brut by Framework Studio
In issue 44, French and Dutch design practice Framework Studio brought their artisanal approach to a family villa overlooking Spain’s Balearic Sea.
36. Hove by Benoît Viaene
Featured in ‘Kitchen Compendium’ and on the cover of issue 44 was Belgian designer Benoît Viaene’s ‘Hove’ project in Antwerp, marked by a quintessentially Belgian approach to material and form.
37. At Home with Joseph Dirand
Also featured in issue 44 inside our ‘Kitchen Compendium’ round up was French architect Joseph Dirand’s elegant Parisian apartment, defined by robust materials and organic forms.
38. Madison Desert Club by Kovac Design Studio
In issue 44, ‘Madison Desert Club’ in La Quinta, California, crafted by North American architects Kovac Design Studio, stood out with its distinctive aluminium foam canopy and Palm Springs-inspired interiors, solidifying its place among our 50 iconic homes.
39. Villa Peduzzi by Andrea Meirana Architects and Studio Daminato
This breathtaking Art Nouveau estate overlooking Italy’s famous Lake Como, designed by English and Italian practice Andrea Meirana Architects and Singaporean interior designers Studio Daminato, appeared in ‘The Detail’ pages of issue 44, with a full home tour on estliving.com.
40. Spring Street by March Studio
We captured our issue 45 cover story, a 70s-inspired apartment inside a Brutalist-style building in Melbourne’s CBD, designed by Australian architects March Studio, through film and photography.
41. Desert Palisades by Woods + Dangaran
We were introduced to North American architects Woods + Dangaran in issue 45 with a desert modernist home in Palms Springs, California.
42. French Riviera by Jean-Charles Tomas
In issue 45, French interior designer Jean-Charles Tomas applied his knowledge of colour, art and vintage furniture to a home on the French Riviera.
43. My Space | Thomas Ostyn
In issue 45, Thomas Ostyn, third-generation owner of kitchen and interior design studio Obumex, took us inside his light-filled home in Brussels, Belgium, designed by Belgian practice Nicolas Schuybroek Architects.
44. At Home with Tania Handelsmann
From Melbourne to Palm Springs, the French Riviera and Brussels, issue 45 was a true showcase of global design, with Australian interior designer Tania Handelsmann’s Regency-style Sydney terrace house adding to the esteemed lineup.
45. Son Serra by BonVivant Concept
A serene Mallorcan home graced the cover of issue 46 – our most-read issue to date – where Spanish design studio BonVivant Concept took a romantic yet contemporary approach, reflecting the region’s history and traditions.
46. Elwood Residence by Flack Studio
Australian interior design practice Flack Studio showcased their expertise in mixing and matching bold materials in issue 46 with a home in Melbourne’s Elwood, as seen in ‘Bathroom Blueprint’.
47. Pacific House by Alexander &CO.
Also making an appearance in Issue 46’s ‘Bathroom Blueprint’ feature was Australian design studio Alexander &CO’s ‘Pacific House’ in Sydney – one of the most-read home features on estliving.com in 2022.
48. Casa Maiora by Studio Andrew Trotter
Spanish practice Studio Andrew Trotter designed this idyllic sandstone villa on the coast of Puglia, Italy, which was featured as part of his ‘esteemed 10’ inclusion in issue 47.
49. Avenue Marceau Apartment by Hélène Van Marcke Interior Architecture Studio
Hélène Van Marcke Interior Architecture Studio were at the helm of this classic Haussmannian apartment redesign in Paris, featured on the cover of issue 48.
50. River House by Susi Leeton Architects + Interiors
We’re concluding our 50 Iconic Homes wrap-up with a full-circle moment: our issue 49 cover home, ‘River House’ by Australian practice Susi Leeton Architects + Interiors was also featured in the very first issue of est magazine. The architect was asked to return to the home for a second incarnation to maximise its connection to the landscape and its owners.
