Unconventional in all the right ways, the Ekstrem chair was conceived in the ’70s by now-late Norwegian industrial designer Terje Ekstrøm, but it was a good few years before any furniture company was willing to manufacture it. Out-of-the-ordinary is Oslo maker Varier’s MO, so they ran with it in the ’80s and today continue to produce the ergonomic, postmodern piece that lets you sit forward with your feet on the ground, to the side with a leg slung over an armrest or backwards with your legs jauntily poked through the openings. Its steel frame being covered in soft foam and woollen knit makes all orientations a highly enjoyable experience.
