Big Rideau Lakehouse is a new four season cottage for a growing multigenerational family in Perth, Ontario. Designed by Simmonds Architecture, the aim was to blend in with the character of the older cottages and provide a clean, modern environment that engages the landscape and captures the feel of the lodge.
Situated on a hillside, the lakehouse has the appearance of a simple one-story gable. The approach leads visitors past a glazed wall that offers a glimpse through the building and views of the lake beyond before turning to reveal a separate entrance, hidden into a low, flat roof volume.
The building faces directly onto the lake, landscaped downwards to accommodate a wide stone terrace which is lowered to allow unobstructed views of the lake from the living and dining areas. Terraced limestone planting beds wrap around the side of the lake house connecting the upper and lower patios.
A patio with a large view of the outdoors connected to the interior is a defining element for this project. Multi-sliding pocket doors create a 15′ opening, extending the living area onto the patio. Hovering from thin hoops, this room in the trees hovers above a terrace that extends from the walk-out level below.
Inside, the interior is designed to enhance natural light with white walls and ceilings and neutral white oak flooring. Black accents give it a bold contrast, while the charcoal gray finish complements the zinc-colored metal roof.
Spacious landscaping allows the new cottage to blend into the long-standing property, rooting the lakehouse into its surroundings with natural limestone terraces and native plantings.
