Forest Hill is a layered and evocative condo in Toronto, Canada home to MT Home designer Justine Golden.

Forest Hill expresses a refined eclecticism, balancing period accents with deferential modernism. The house features a curation of dynamic artworks tempered by soft, sculptural furniture and objects and an ornamental approach to materiality. “We bought the house and owned it six weeks later,” Justine says. “Construction began right away and, due to the personal element and me being immersed in the design industry, there was both an ease and definite challenges across the project.”

Inspired by travel and fashion, Justine’s lived experiences have shaped the design of her family home. A palette of creams, alabaster, pale blush, oyster tones and blond timbers has cultivated a soft, cocoon-like atmosphere that distils natural and ambient light. As a masterful peacemaker, precise applications of matte black have been elegantly woven into significance, coaxed from leadlight windows and reinstated through accents in kitchen stools, overhead lights, joinery and dynamic stonework.

A balance between classical and contemporary is evident within every corner of the home. “I purchased items for my home from Africa, Paris, Brazil, and Asia – both vintage and new,” Justine explains. “I have an eclectic style that I wanted my home to portray to make it reflect who I am.”

Drawing on industry relationships and her long-standing design experience, Forest Hill has been shaped by art and design principles, celebrating personal style while meticulously editing it to leave spaces feeling refined and resolved.

Starting with the stone, which sets the tone from the moment of arrival with a marble arch adorning the threshold between entry and convertible living and dining space, Forest Hill’s interiors have unfolded to inform a warm family home layered in different textures and materials. “I added in antique brass, warm woods, micro-cement, Venetian plaster and chunky boucle to achieve a result that is rich in texture but also understated and quiet,” Justine says.

Forest Hill is underpinned by the innate qualities of home – sanctuary, quietude, agility and durability – yet evolved through the unique convergence of Justine’s personal and professional identities.
