The creative synergy between Armadillo and Studio Andrew Trotter has crafted a unified vision for this restored 17th-century home.

Architectural practice Studio Andrew Trotter and co-owner of Casa Soleto Marcelo Martínez have meticulously reimagined a 17th-century palazzotto in Puglia’s Salento region. Featuring an evocative collection of rug designs that creates an emotional connection with the surrounding architecture, the design destination provides visitors with an authentic immersion into the essence of Italian village living.

Armadillo inspires opulence through their range of handwoven rugs. These six rugs comprise Armadillo’s Classic Collection, from subtle hues to deeply intense tones, building an aesthetical foundation and unearthing a sense of quiet luxury within the walls of Casa Soleto. “The rooms are majestic and with beautiful details that had been left to fade. We wanted to bring all this back, with a touch of modernity, yet keeping all the feeling of the beautiful Italian building,” Andrew explains.

Casa Soleto echoes the baroque palazzos of the region. “The houses are quite heavily detailed, yet inside, they are simple,” Andrew says. A shared view of creative philosophies between Studio Andrew Trotter and Armadillo created a unified vision for this restored 17th-century home. Craftsmanship and artisanal finishes were fundamental to honouring the original design and the reason the house was furnished throughout with Armadillo’s rugs. “You see a quality that only comes from the hand. This is why we loved to work with Armadillo,” Andrew says.

Each rug has been woven by hand from thick yarns of hardy jute and echoes the gentle ripples of water for an aesthetic that balances authenticity with simplicity. “The rugs are the perfect unison of new and old. They are modern, yet the same as rugs of the past hundreds of years,” Andrew says.

From the richly textured Mesa rug in the bedroom to the River rug in the living space, the organic material of these six rugs each offers a comforting material underfoot for guests, imparting a sense of warmth and texture to the concrete floors and celebrating the artistry behind each piece.
