Nestled in the Brandenburg countryside, about an hour from Berlin, stands a beautifully renovated old schoolhouse transformed into a home of extraordinary charm. The masterminds behind this breathtaking project are Laura and Nora, the creative duo behind the beloved Instagram account Food Stories. Their knack for merging timeless design with modern functionality shines brightly in their latest renovation—a kitchen that tells a story of past and present, form and function, and unmistakable style.
Their Third Shaker Kitchen

This is not Laura and Nora’s first venture into creating stunning kitchens, nor is it their first collaboration with the renowned kitchen makers, deVOL. In fact, it’s their third deVOL kitchen, each one carrying a distinct personality while embodying their signature aesthetic. What makes this project particularly intriguing is its incorporation of Shaker furniture originally crafted for their first countryside kitchen outside Berlin.

In a stroke of ingenuity, Laura and Nora salvaged many of the cupboards from their rented first home and repurposed them for this larger kitchen. With the help of deVOL’s expert designers and carpenters, the old cupboards were seamlessly integrated with new ones to create a flawless, cohesive design. This approach not only highlights sustainability but also demonstrates how thoughtful design can carry memories forward into new spaces.
The Palette: Mushroom and Crackle Metro

As in their previous projects, Laura and Nora opted for deVOL’s Mushroom paint color for the cupboards—a soft, warm hue that serves as the perfect backdrop for their creativity. For the splashback, they chose deVOL’s Crackle Metro Tiles, lending a touch of texture and old-world charm. These foundational choices set the tone for the room, inviting layers of brass accents and a glimmering copper worktop on the island to add a little sparkle.
A Mix of Materials and Textures

What truly sets this kitchen apart is Laura and Nora’s innate ability to mix materials and colors in a way that feels both natural and luxurious. For the worktops and sink, they boldly chose Arabescato marble. Its striking veining creates a dramatic contrast to the muted tones of the cupboards and the original architectural features of the schoolhouse, such as its tall ceilings and large windows. This juxtaposition enhances the space, making it both grounded and glamorous.
Brass and Copper Accents

The gleam of brass fixtures and a copper worktop add a warm, luminous quality to the kitchen, balancing the coolness of the marble. These metallic elements, paired with deVOL’s carefully designed accessories, give the space a subtle elegance while maintaining its functional purpose.
A Natural Backdrop for Food Stories

Laura and Nora’s kitchens are more than just places to cook—they’re stages for storytelling. Every detail, from the layout to the smallest accessory, is chosen with intention. The old schoolhouse kitchen becomes a character in their Food Stories photography, its natural light and carefully curated design elements providing the perfect backdrop for their artful images of food and drink.
Timeless Simplicity with a Glamorous Twist

The essence of Laura and Nora’s design philosophy lies in their ability to achieve a balance between simplicity and glamor. Their spaces are inviting and functional, yet undeniably chic. This kitchen, with its harmonious blend of old and new, muted tones, and bold materials, exemplifies their style beautifully.

Laura and Nora’s vision combined with deVOL’s craftsmanship has resulted in a kitchen that feels both personal and timeless. It’s a reminder of the magic that happens when creativity and skill meet, and an inspiration to anyone looking to create a space that is as functional as it is beautiful.
As always, the duo’s photographs capture the heart of the kitchen. While we’d love to visit the schoolhouse in person, their stunning imagery makes the experience feel almost tangible. Laura and Nora’s work continues to inspire, and this kitchen is yet another testament to their impeccable taste and ingenuity.
