This project provides a workspace as well as an ideal place to think. Hovering over the city of San Francisco, Aerie is a dual state in which physical and psychological space offers clarity and separation. Literally, this rooftop home office is a place to observe the world, but withdraw from the day-to-day preoccupations.
Designed by architects Luke Ogrydziak and Zoe Prillinger of OPA who have successfully completed this project as a work and study space that rests on a four-storey drop from the existing home. This is a place to get distance, retreat from the city and home.
Interior design filled with light and beautiful views
To support a rarefied atmosphere for observation and reflection, the interior design contrasts extreme exposure with well-crafted protection. Emphasizing the psychological detachment, the entire ceiling was filled with the light of the sun opening up to the sky. This is what makes the interior suffused with natural lighting. Light from the sun and skydome passes through several diffusion layers to create an even ceiling plane, as well as non-directional light. The quality of this light continually changes, and diffusion recalibrates, linking the interior to the annual and daily cycles of the sun’s motion.
Cozy and ergonomic furniture
Not only does it offer views and an amazing outdoor atmosphere, Aerie is also equipped with cozy and ergonomic furniture. A large built-in table and easy chairs sit at the front edge of the room, providing 180 degree views. Above the main work surface, the perimeter remains open to a ceiling plane which is entirely lit by external light. A continuous horizontal ribbon of glass bends four sides of the project, with minimalist windows. The visual connection instantly heightens the feeling of being in the air, while enjoying the beauty of the city of San Francisco from above.
