Greece is a land of myth and mystery, stunning sunrises and warm sandy beaches and if you’re planning a holiday to this beautiful country there are some must-see sights to add to your itinerary.

But the wealth of choice can be overwhelming; with so many islands and cities on offer, it’s hard to know where to start! Here, we have rounded up five of the most quintessential sights to see in Greece for your consideration – perhaps they will give you some inspiration in planning your trip!

1. Meteora

Historic monasteries are perched atop these cliffs. Built in the 14th and 16th centuries, they are an incredible sight to see if you are staying in north central mainland Greece (or have hired a car to get around).

The Holy Monastery of Roussanou is the easiest to access, as the cliff it sits on is much lower than the others and a new bridge has been installed to access it. If you prefer glitz and glamor though, head to the Holy Trinity Monastery which was a location in the James Bond movie ‘For Your Eyes Only’. It’s a long way up, with 280 steep steps to climb, but it’s well worth it for the surrounding views and the incredible sights inside the monastery when you get to the top.

2. Elafonisi beach

This beach is famous for its pink-tinged sand, and makes for stunning photography opportunities – whether you love using Instagram or are a serious snapper and wield a DSLR. Located on the Greek island of Crete, it’s a stunning place to get away from it all. You’ll need to take an hour long boat trip to reach the pink shore or drive 90 minutes from Paleohora, but it’s well worth the journey.

3. Akrotiri

If your trip is taking you to the Greek island of Santorini, plan time to visit Akrotiri – a Minoan Bronze Age settlement that was destroyed and buried in volcanic ash, perfectly preserving its wonders.

4. Melissani cave

If you’re planning an excursion to the island of Kefalonia then a trip to the natural wonder of Melissani cave should be on the cards. This stunning geological phenomenon can be explored via a boat ride (which costs about €7) that takes you into the cave to witness the crystal clear, azure waters within and the stunning natural stalagmite and stalactite formations.

5. Acropolis of Athens

One of the most well-known historical sites in Greece, this hilltop temple is a marvel to see. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means it is protected, but surprisingly you can get up close and personal with the structure and wander round the site, enjoying the stunning architecture and rich history of the place. You’ll also witness stunning views of the city of Athens below. There are guided tours available, but it’s also worth taking time to explore the ruins yourself, camera in hand, to marvel at the structure still standing.
