We Make Collective Relaunch Day 5 | DIY Circular Woven Wall Hanging

It’s day five which means we made it to the weekend! Yes! And even better it means only two days until we release the next We Make Collective kit and the big competition! But for today we’re giving away this DIY circular woven wall hanging by our contributor Erin over at Francoise Et Moi. Over to you Erin…

The great thing about weaving is that not only does it look incredible hung on it’s own, the finished piece can be applied to all kinds of forms and every day items for an end result which is truly unique and special.

In this tutorial I’ll be showing you how to make a circular shaped wall hanging, and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised how easy it is!

What you’ll need:

Travel loom kit from We Make Collective
Round cork trivet (mine are just from ikea!) or a piece of cork cut into a circle
Strap of leather or fabric
Nails
Hammer
Scissors
Staple Gun

Step 1

Set up your travel loom kit and start by tying your string in a knot at the first nodule. Then start wrapping the string up and down, keeping tension in the string, until you reach the other end and tie this in a knot too.

Step 2 –

Time to start weaving! Pick your first yarn colour, cut approx 150cm to work swith and thread an end through your needle, leaving approx 2 inches on the other side and tie this in a knot to secure it.

Now simply start feeding the needle over and under the string from left to right, right to left. When you reach the other side, you want to re-enter the loom on the opposite side of your string to how you excited. So for example, if your last piece went underneath the string, you want to start by going over the string to go back the other way.

Step 3 –

Every row, use your comb tool to push the wool downwards so it’s nice and compacted.

Continue weaving through up until you reach the end of your piece of yarn and be sure to finish with at least an inch over hanging one side so that you can neatly tuck this away later.

Step 4 –

Choose your next colour, set up your needle and enter the loom on the same side you finished your previous colour, remembering to start on the opposite side of the string. So if your last piece went over the string, you need to start by going under the string.

Step 5 –

When you get to using your merino wool (the deliciously soft cotton candy looking one!) I recommend just simply weaving this through with your hands. Instead of weaving every single thread, make it spontaneous and miss 5 at a time then maybe 2 at a time, so that you end up with an awesome bubbly effect.

Step 6 –

To make the tassels, cut a piece of yarn about 2-3 inches long. Choose two pieces of string next to eachother on your loom, and you’re basically taking each end of your yarn underneath the outside of the two strings, then pulling them up through the middle. Step 7 –

Once your loom is complete, snip each loop at the top and tie two strings at a time in a knot. Do this one by one so you don’t get yourself into a pickle!

If like me you make your weave really tight to the bottom you don’t need to worry about tying knots in the bottom row, just loop them off.

Step 8 –

Now to tuck in the dangly sides. Flip your weave over and one by one, pull your left overs back through some of the string to secure it. Use your needle if it gets tricky.
