Sculptural, elegant and contemporary; black kitchens makes a big style statement when it comes to the the heart and hub of the home.

We revisit our est living archives to uncover eight inspirational black kitchens. Whether the design incorporates subtle, matte black tapware, sleek, black appliances or the statement-making inclusion of a luxuriously oversized, black-veined marble kitchen island or floor-to-ceiling black stained timber joinery; each kitchen impresses with its own unique aesthetic, all the while sharing one common design element; a thoroughly black palette.

With the ability to transcend seasons and styles, black kitchens are well-versed at highlighting textures and complementary tones, creating interesting design contrasts, drama and tension, but above all, black kitchens ensure a timeless, classic and modern aesthetic prevails.

The Finger Wharf Apartment by Architect Prineas

Architect Prineas has fused together two of our favourite things: a daring design within a small-scale home. This prestigious heritage-listed apartment in Sydney now hosts a reconfigured kitchen in an alluring array of black and gold tones which reflect Architect Prineas’ precision to detail. The thoroughly monochromatic palette accentuates a brave application of saturating black and accents of metallics including the bold, brushed brass kitchen island.

Balancing durability with a minimalist restraint, Centralpark Residence by Studiofour channels a Danish/Japanese-inspired black kitchen. Featuring little embellishment and a subdued palette this kitchen evokes a sense of calm, stillness and space. Charcoal painted brick paired with matte black floor-to-ceiling joinery and nordic timber tones all build a homely and textured aesthetic, while accents of greenery offer a refreshing break in colour.

The Chimney House by Studio David Thulstrup

“Although I was encouraged to make it edgy, liveability was still a guiding principle. I wanted it to have the personality, functions and aesthetics of a private home,” says designer and creative director David Thulstrup of Studio David Thulstrup. A collaborative design effort; The Chimney House accommodation in Copenhagen captures the innovative sensibility of both the Vipp brand and of Studio David Thulstrup’s ethos. Streamlined and generously proportioned, this black Vipp kitchen favours function over form and captures the true staying power of design over fleeting trends.

1906 Apartment by Amber Road

“In this highly considered and elegant apartment, everything has its place, nothing is wasted and most things are much more than what at first they seem.” explains Amber Road Co-director Yasmine Ghoniem. This statement certainly rings true within the kitchen space of Amber Road’s 1906 Apartment, where depth and character have been revealed through dark chocolate timbers, richly-hued marbles, matte black tapware and upholstered Dita Stools by Gazia&Co.

Centennial Park by Madeleine Blanchfield

Known for their classic yet modern aesthetic, the black kitchen space within Madeleine Blanchfield‘s Centennial Park House bears no exception to her design rule. A new steel extension encompassing the new kitchen gave way to an open and light-filled, contemporary family space. Using a refined monochromatic palette featuring black cabinetry, fluted glass and black-stained Bar Stool’s by INODA+SVEJE this kitchen opens out onto greenery; both through a splashback and via the black steel-framed doors which open out to the garden beyond.
