The Clubhouse takes up a pristine position in the dunes of the Mornington Peninsula, overlooking the fairways and surrounds of Sorrento Golf Club. One of the clients grew up in an old Merchant home on the property, where they holidayed throughout their childhood. From concept to completion Wolveridge Architects kept climate front of mind, working towards sustainable and low maintenance solutions wherever possible. Situated in the dunes among the tea tree scrub, the timber clad Clubhouse is constructed deep into the undulating land, leaving it elevated for exceptional views of the golf course and beyond. As the studio points out, “at a very basic level – this is a beach house, that incorporates cross ventilation pathways through it at both levels, with framed garden outlooks and a significant focus on the experience of natural light”.
Also paramount to the project was creating a luxury upper-level suite that included a landscaped outdoor area and cantilevered pool. Here protected outdoor spaces have been incorporated, to fully appreciate the landscape design that features coastal dune flora native to the area.
Everyday comforts and quality design choices make this home appear more like a stylish permanent residence than a holiday home. Just take the Apparatus Pendant that sits above the sculpted kitchen island bench and its carved out sink; the ideal entertainers setting. The highly sculptural features of the kitchen are present throughout the brutalist interior, in the steel and concrete stairs and bathroom with its concrete sinks and stone bath on a timber platform.
