It’s not often you find an inner-city building that holistically mimics its surrounds – but as its name suggests, Rockley Gardens Apartments is just that. Neighbouring a picture-perfect parkland, this building brings the landscape inside to deliver a grounding metropolitan sanctuary. Curated with dramatic class and poise, if ever there was a building that flawlessly captures both the urban pleasures and natural assets of Melbourne, this would be it.

With a gallery-like configuration, the rooms seamlessly flow from one to another. Each space has a unique purpose and offers a place of privacy and relaxation for its residents. Black-framed frosted glass paneling separates the dining room and kitchen, allowing for seclusion without completely enclosing these adjacent rooms. A sense of spaciousness and cohesion is evident through the repeated use of dark-stained parquetry flooring that line each space.

Bold and masculine best describes this interior’s material palette. Taking inspiration from the surrounding landscape, raw materials were used to lend a grounding factor. “Material palettes reflect two sides of this coin: the garden, with green marble and dark timbers, or the gallery, a soothing blend of blonde woods and grey marble” said the architects. The warm blonde timber acts as a softening contrast to the valorous use of dark cabinetry and accents. Bringing an overwhelming sense of sophistication, the combination of green and grey natural stone used in both the kitchen and bathroom gives the space a unique and interesting palette.

Embodying their design value to create spaces that truly reflect an individual’s narrative, the architects have incorporated custom joinery, collections and art that aren’t merely objects but pieces infused with personality and life. Each space is far more than just functional, with the integral elements acting more like bespoke pieces of furniture than amenities. The juxtaposition of raw materials, a spacious yet inclusive layout, and effortless styling are the ideal ingredients for a timeless dwelling.

“This is an Elenberg Fraser definition of luxury, permissive architecture that gives you the freedom to express your unique identity and to curate your own life.”
