It’s not the first time we’ve looked abroad for our own slice of Swedish living – and it certainly won’t be our last. We’re calling all est readers looking to secure a Stockholm abode – or at least entertain the idea – because we’ve found your match on a quiet one-way street in Birkastan. Owning the neighbourhood title as the centre of the city’s emerging creative class, this newly renovated art nouveau apartment is beckoning for hip inhabitants to call home.

The Birkastan apartment exists as one of 26 built in the late 1920s. A gentle restoration has brought the quaint abode into the new age, preserving the existing timber flooring and mirroring the old in all of the introduced elements. The kitchen cabinetry fits as if it always has with period features and this sense of timelessness is carried through the moody hues and monochrome interiors. We are immediately drawn to the crisp white and light-bathed bedroom that has us ready to curl up in the irresistible comfort of linen.  Sitting on the lesser of the less-is-more scale, the apartment has a selection of bold accents ready to be replicated with own flavour.

While the apartment block may be a throwback to the 20th-century, it is packed with all of the modern amenities you can only ask of the Swedes. Not only will you be basking in your minimal home-making, but a common laundry, sauna and relaxation room. Practically, the block offers storage facilities in the basement and plenty of green space in a front and rear courtyard. And when you can’t get out to enjoy the garden, you are blessed with a leafy view from each window.

Naturally, finding an optimal place to sleep, we wanted to magnify the best places to eat, drink and shop. Located in Vasastan — a predominantly residential area — the arty conversation lies in the pocket of Birkastan. The Birkastan neighbourhood has been nick-named ‘little Paris’ and one of Stockholm’s cosiest neighbourhoods. There’s no looking past the appeal of white-walled boutiques like Carin Wester and the Acne Archive Store all within a stone’s throw. Taking a step out of the Birkastan district, Vasastan is dotted with bespoke shops and vintage stores, adding a creative pulse among plenty of eateries. You’ll be sure to experience culinary delight at the Portal restaurant serving a menu of Sweden’s finest foods, or a satisfying Sunday brunch at the STHLM Brunch Club. For the city-dweller needing some wide-open space, Vasaparken park is a treat all year round, but a real event in winter with an ice-skating rink.

Brimming with light and life, we don’t blame you for looking to a Stockholm sea change, especially when an apartment in Birkastan is on the cards. It’s time to snap up an opportunity at Swedish living with all of the stylish trimmings.
