This recent residential project by award-winning Melbourne practice Mim Design features a stunning internal transformation of an historic Edwardian home. The owners of DRF Residence, a young family of four, wanted to turn their home, which was dark with cramped unusable spaces, into a modern sanctuary that paid homage to the era’s architectural styling. Mim Design principal Miriam Fanning and her team were called on to implement a comprehensive plan covering the interior architectural framework, styling and soft furnishings, which resulted in an entirely new look.

One of my favourite elements of this stunning home is the curved fireplace in the living room with built in shelving. The incredible chair is the Almora Armchair designed by Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien for B&B Italia.

The goal of Mim Design was to create a family home that not only met the client’s needs aesthetically but also created a practical family home where each room and space served a purpose. By studying how the family lived, their demand on space, storage and passion for entertaining, the design team reimagined the entire floorplan, gutting the home and creating an entire new interior.

The Alphabeta Trio Pendant by Luca Nichetto for Hem provides a touch of playfulness to the sophisticated dining area.

The eight-month internal renovation across the entire house was beautifully enhanced with a layering of materials. A soft palette of greys and off-whites with accents of black added a timeless brilliance to the interior, respecting the Edwardian architecture. In stark contrast to the home’s previously heavy finishes, marble benchtops, soft grey cabinetry and white-oiled oak floors lighten up the space. Creating a illuminated feel throughout, Miriam says “the best thing is the clients love living there now, it’s like a breath of fresh air.”

I love the mix of dark green and brass accents in this second cosy living space. The Palette Table is designed by Jamie Hayon for &Tradition and the 637 Utrecht XL Armchair is by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld

The bedroom showcases a refined elegance and the continuation of jewell tones, with dark navy bedding and touches of velvet.

The bathrooms feature new black steel window frames and doors, custom light fittings, a sculptural fireplace and Buster + Punch handles, all of which came together to introduce “old school glamour” and a softness into the home.
