This Stick n’ Stitch stuff is magical, it’s also sold as Fabri-Solvy (as seen ), and you just draw or print on it, stick it on, embroider, wash it away. If your kiddo already has a drawing they want to stitch, you can use a copier to transfer it on to the sheets as well. Then you can’t see any missed lines, since they wash away, unlike when you draw directly on fabric.
I think Sulky’s cotton petites are great for kids to embroider with because it’s not as fussy. No pulling out three strands, no tangles. You can double it up for a thicker effect, but I used a single strand for this project and it is plenty visible.
This might be my favorite gift ever; not only is it a sweet reminder of his early writing (and interests, with the dinosaur), it is imbued with the memory of working together!

Hand embroidered Mother’s Day craft that kids can make
Supplies
- *
- Pen (any type will do)
- Package of Stick n’ Stitch (you can buy it * or on *)
- Sulky Cotton Petites Thread (you can buy * or single spools *)
- * – these are my favorite
- Sharp scissors
- * (optional)
- Felt scrap 6″ square
- Fine point permanent marker or other way to mark the date
- Hot glue gun
- Woven/quilting cotton or felt fat quarter
- 1/4″y of fusible interfacing (optional – I find that it helps prevent puckering).
- Iron
Steps
Step 1 – Print the template out on to a sheet of the Stick n’ Stitch, with the ink on the fuzzy/raised side. Cut one out roughly, and then cut a piece of the fabric and interfacing that is about 7″ square, leaving extra room around all sides. Use your iron and fuse the interfacing to the wrong (unprinted) side of the fabric, following the packaging’s instructions.
Step 2- Give your child a pen and let them draw, reminding them to stay inside the black circle. You may want to practice on regular paper first! A super thick marker will make for messier stitches since it is less clear where to “stay on the line” so we used a ballpoint pen.
Step 3– Use your scissors and trim out around the drawing, cutting off all of the black circle outline.
Step 4– Insert the fabric into your embroidery hoop and tighten it until it is taut. Peel off the drawing’s backing and center it in the hoop. Get your other supplies ready to stitch!
Step 5– Pick a color and get to stitching! We did his whole drawing in a back stitch, if you’re not familiar there is a video in this post of . When you’re just starting, or their attention span is wavering, you can help hold the hoop, help them place the needle going up, or simply take a break and come back another day.
Step 6– It’s a balance between showing that you can take a stitch out and redo it without totally obsessing over perfection. Generally you want to tie off knots in between letters so you can’t see the floss through the front of the fabric.
Step 7– Take the fabric out of the hoop and run it gently under hot water until the Stick n Stitch has washed away. You may need to gently agitate spots with your finger nail but try not to scrub at the fabric. Lay it out flat to dry over night, I like to leave a microfiber towel underneath to speed up the process.
Step 8– I wanted a fun hoop, so we picked out a floral, fabric tape and decorated the hoop with it while the design dried.
Step 9– Use the outside of the hoop to trace a circle in the felt and cut it out. Normally I’d use cute little fabric stamps to date this (as seen on this ) but we just moved and I couldn’t find them, so I used a fine point permanent marker.
Step 10– Once your design has dried, insert it back into the embroidery hoop and tighten it up again. Check that it is centered from the front, and then trim the backing fabric off about 1/4″ tall all the way around.
Step 11- Use your hot glue gun and glue down the fabric border, and then glue your felt circle over top. Hang it up and admire your kid made embroidered Mother’s Day gift!
