Cut paper art by Annie Howe

Annie Howe creates hand-cut paper art that has a focus on storytelling. With a background in fiber art, she previously produced large-scale puppetry and shadow puppets performances while gradually shifting from 3D objects to the intimacy of paper.

To produce her images, Annie uses 70lb acid-free drawing paper and sketches the design of each illustration on the back. Then, she extracts the symmetrical details of the design before cutting smaller and smaller pieces until she can’t cut anymore.

Annie uses bold shapes that are reminiscent of Pennslyvania Dutch folk art. Her designs are illuminated when she hangs them along a clothesline in the vibrant blue sky. It’s as if they were always meant to be floating in the air—her illustrations come alive among the fresh open air.
