Love Scandinavian home decor? Then you’re in the right place. I’m starting a new series of Scandinavian home tours that will be full of tips and ideas on how you too can create a Scandinavian style home.
The first home tour is this beautiful bright apartment that measures 730 sq ft (68sqm) so it’s not a big space but still there is so much to inspire us all. Having a small home doesn’t mean that it has to be cluttered or that you can’t have a feeling of space. No matter how small a home, the Scandinavians are great at creating a space that is both functional and beautiful by simply following the rule of only having what you need, love and use – nothing more.
The first thing that stands out about this apartment is how much natural light it has. Yes the windows are big but the natural light is enhanced because there are no window coverings and there is a lot of white in this living room. Going for windows without coverings is a great way to increase natural light no matter how big or small your windows are. This isn’t always practical but if you can do this in living spaces it’s a great idea.
Texture is another key feature in this living space. Texture is absolutely essential to add cozy warmth to a space and to help bring a room together. In this living room we have a beautiful mix of linen, marble, sheepskin, seagrass, wool, rattan and more, all in neutral tones. In addition the few subtle patterns – the rug pattern and marble – all add to making this space interesting and cohesive.
In addition to all the textures, there are different shades of wood from the dark wood dining table to the pale wood floors. Natural wood is another feature in Scandinavian home decor as it adds much needed warmth to spaces. We can’t forget the plants that add a bit of colour and more texture to the space.
The bedroom is simple and minimalist yet has so much charm and character. I love how vintage and modern styles are mixed together with a modern wardrobe combined with vintage benches and stools. Once again this room has lots of texture, plants and different tones of wood.
Even though this is a spacious room, the doorless wardrobe adds to the feeling of space and light in the room. I love the little unexpected details like the rustic wooden ladder and the antique wall hanger.
Site lines from one room to another are always important in a home because when you pay attention to them, they can bring your whole home together in such a cohesive way. Here, the view from the bedroom looks at the dark wood table which compliments the dark wooden bench in the bedroom. You also see the oversized poster which adds a bit of fun and drama.
The small entryway is very much in keeping with the rest of the apartment. Once again you have different wood tones and different textures like leather, marble and concrete. The basic floor to ceiling cupboard hides all the stuff, making the entrance very tidy and organised, even though it’s small. That’s one of the things I love most about Scandinavian home decor – they have a place for everything and you rarely see any clutter, no matter !
The bathroom is a little unexpected with the clay plaster walls which are both beautiful and practical for a room with lots of moisture. I love how clay plaster has this seamless feel to it and it makes a nice change from tiles. The rest of the bathroom is simple with white and chrome fixtures and fittings.
