The sun couldn’t shine brighter in Southern California. The golden state is blessed with Malibu beaches, world famous surf spots and the desert plains of Palm Springs. Sprung from this dreamy aesthetic, the state has also made a name for itself in the design realm. That’s right, we are talking about So-Cal style.
After the Myra House by Gordana Golubovic won us over with its relaxed yet sophisticated identity, it was only natural we took a closer look at lifting the summer spirit from the West Coast interiors. Southern California has broad design influence, crediting the Spanish-colonial style and lifting cues from the sunny streets of LA and the culture capital of San Francisco. Free of clutter and the restraint of trends, So-Cal Style is built on traditional materials and methods of making. It is the woven and the white, the timber and the textural, dressed by fresh hints of greenery.
We’ve collated a selection of well-worn and natural pieces for your own slice of the So-Cal. They do say West Coast is the best coast and we’re certainly inclined to agree.
CH25 Chair by Cult
Designed by Hans J. Wegner, this is the quintessential woven chair to any sunlit space. This midcentury style staple is made from papercord and timber, sitting pretty on the milky LA palette of the Myra House.
Porter’s Rustic Oak Heritage Natural Timber
It wouldn’t be So-Cal style if a space wasn’t timber from top to toe. The unstained floorboards by Porter’s Paints are relaxed foundation to an interior of warm hues, characteristic to So-Cal’s Spanish-Colonial homes.
21.1 Standard Suspension Light by Poliform
A dreamy Californian space is not complete without a chic pendant light. Take Poliform’s 21.1 Standard Suspension Light, gently illuminating an airy abode by the Pacific coast. The design was even inspired by barnacles on a rock surface, so there’s no questioning its place in a coastal home.
Alasht 12 Rug by Halcyon Lake
The key to So-Cal style is varying textural finishes and that never felt better underfoot. Made with a unique knotting technique and traditional weaving, the Alasht 12 Rug dabbles a soft hint of California colour and visual interest to any living space.
Tribu Pure Sofa by Cosh Living
The essential outdoor sofa. The Tribu Pure Sofa by Cosh Living is for that laid-back outdoor experience, with its teak frame and plush cushions reminding us of the comfort of California living.
Ava Storage Basket Hamper
Why not incorporate a tactile element to hide all of the ‘it bits’? We are all for this So-Cal approach to storage, honing in on the relaxed, sandy vibes while being readily moveable from room to room. The versatile Ava Storage Basket Hamper by Connected Goods is fairly traded, making it an even more worthwhile addition.
Milano by Adobe Living
Milano by Abode Living accentuates the pared-back style So-Cal does best. The soft white quality of 100% Egyptian cotton is an essential to the minimal bedroom space. Even better? These sheets have a 250 thread count, perfect for breezy summer nights.
The Moller #77 Stool Great Dane.
It’s surely no coincidence that recent Californian favourites est – Gordana Golubovic, Ryan Leider and Denise Kuriger – are big fans of a cord stool for breakfast at the kitchen bench. The Moller #77 Stool by Great Dane is exactly the blend of natural texture and that lived-in look we seek out.
The Turkish Pot
So-Cal style does take its share of Mediterranean influence with that ever-warm coastal climate, and the robust Turkish Pot is perfect for large indoor plants. These pots are all unique – some made over 150 years ago. Your indoor palms couldn’t be housed in anything more authentic.
