When all of the new in such gorgeous warm neutral shades were released this summer, I instantly thought of my Elizabeth Zigzag Blanket from a few years ago. Designed for a friend’s new baby, this throw is a multicolor random striped zigzag dream. It’s still one of my most popular blanket patterns but most of the original colors I used have since been discontinued, so it was the perfect opportunity to give this design a little facelift – AND, the best part is that now it’s free! It’s *so* fun to make this throw and see all of the different colors come to life and meander across the fabric. The meditative stitching truly helped me survive election week, haha. I think zigzag blankets might be my favorite crochet projects. There’s just enough intrigue with the color changes to keep you interested, but the repetitive rows offer so much zen. Something about knowing I have a big project with simple stitches to reach for is always such a treat.
Perfect as a couch throw or baby blanket, this project can easily be scaled up or down for a larger or smaller throw or even a blanket scarf! I love that it can serve as a blank canvas to do your own striping design, or even to make it a solid color. When I designed the first one, I just changed colors as I pleased as I went along. I love the creative process and decision making along the way! But this time around, since the pattern was already written, there was a different kind of joy in just getting to relax and follow the instructions so I didn’t have to use much brain power.
Crochet blankets are also so fun to work because of the speed at which they grow. I couldn’t believe how quickly I was able to finish this project, and I’m already itching to start another one! Even using the same 8 colors, rearranging how they are dispersed can create a totally unique throw each time.
This pattern is tweaked a tiny bit from the original so ensure an even amount of yarn is used of each color, but the essence is still the same. This is an easy level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are double crochet, dc2tog, dc3tog, single crochet, and changing colors.
MATERIALS:
1 skein each Lion Brand Wool-Ease in Canyon Sunset (620-003) for color A, Umber (620-026) for color B, Fisherman (620-099) for color C, Oatmeal (620-024) for color D, Flint (620-052) for color E, Thrush (620-025) for color F, Antler (620-021) for color G, and Black (620-153) for color H, or approx. 1576yds/1440m total of another worsted weight, cat. 4 yarn
Size US J/10 (6mm) crochet hook

FINISHED DIMENSIONS:
(A) Length: 40”/101.5cm
(B) Width: 36”/91.5cm
GAUGE:
14 sts + 8 rows = 4″/10cm in double crochet

Dc – Double crochet
Dc2tog – Double crochet 2 together
Dc3tog – Double crochet 3 together

St(s) – Stitch(es)
Notes: Pattern is worked in flat in back and forth rows – turn at the end of each row. There is not a turning chain at the beginning of each row. The sc, ch 1, and first dc of each row imitates a decrease to match the dc2tog at the end of each row. This helps keep the edges straight so that there isn’t extra bulk from a turning chain or a hole left from skipping a stitch in traditional double crochet rows. To change color, work the last yarn over of the previous row in the new color.
With color A, ch 130.
Row 1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 1, ch 1, dc 7, 3 dc in next st, dc 6, *dc3tog, dc 6, 3 dc in next st, dc 6, rep from * to last 2 sts, dc2tog. (129 sts)
Row 2: Sc 1, ch 1, dc 7, 3 dc in next st, dc 6, *dc3tog, dc 6, 3 dc in next st, dc 6, rep from * to last 2 sts, dc2tog.
Rep row 2 twice more using color A. Continue to rep row 2, changing colors and following the number of rows as indicated below.
Color B: 2 rows.
Color C: 3 rows.
Color D: 1 row.
Color E: 1 row.
Color F: 6 rows.
Color G: 3 rows.
Color H: 3 rows.
Color A: 1 row.
Color B: 5 rows.
Color C: 6 rows.
