Step 1: Cutting the Base

For the base of your wall art, you are going to be creating a cardboard cut-out in the shape of a heart. You can either print a heart stencil or draw it with your pencil directly on the surface of your cardboard piece. Draw a large symmetrical heart with a smaller one inside it. The second heart should be about 1 or 1.5 inches smaller than the large one.

Using your scissors, cut the large heart and then the smaller one inside it.

When done, you should be left with a cardboard heart looking something like this:

Step 2: Cutting & Gluing the Twigs

Using an armsaw or a cutter knife, it’s time to cut the branches and twigs you’ve collected into pieces that are about 0.5 inches longer than the thickness of your cardboard heart. For instance, if the heart cut-out is 1.5 inches, then your twigs should measure between 2 and 2.5 inches.

When you’ve cut all the twigs to size, it’s time to use the glue gun to stick them to the heart cardboard cut-out. Apply a line of glue to the base and vertically glue the first twig. Then, repeat the process for all the twigs, gluing one right next to the last one.

Cut the piece of ribbon to the length of your choice.

Choose the two symmetrical spots on the back of the wall art where the ends of the ribbon will be glued. Apply a dot of glue and gently press one end of the ribbon to make it stick.

It’s time to make your rustic twig heart wall art even more beautiful by adding some visually appealing details to it. Grab your jute fabric and create a ribbon out of it.

When you’re done, cut the remainder of the ribbon so that the ends of the ribbon will be of similar length.

Proceed to tying the ribbon in the middle using some of the ribbon you have left from when you made the hanging mechanism. The two colors should create a beautiful contrast.

Take your piece of brown crepe paper and cut leaf-shaped pieces out of it. About five pieces should be enough for the next step. Start by drawing the outline on the paper using your pencil.

Take the scissors and proceed to making the cuts.

Your shapes should look something like this:

It’s time to glue the crepe paper leaves to the white pompoms. Apply a little bit of glue on one of the pompons and glue another one to it.

When your flower-shaped pompoms are ready, start to glue the artificial leaves to the back. Apply a dot of glue in the center of the bulge of pompoms, and then apply the first crepe paper leaf to it.

Repeat the process until you’ve glued all the five crepe paper leaves to the back of the pompoms, in a star-shaped pattern.

Take the artificial leaves and, if needed, cut the stems so that you are left only with the leaves.

Glue the leaves together on one side of your twig heart art.
