flower garland diy

I’m constantly bangin’ on about creativity and creating for the sake of creating in this house. I don’t always follow my own advice because each time I create a diy for you guys, I worry that it won’t turn out right or that I’ll run out of ideas. What you see here is the final result of something that may have taken me hours, days and sometimes even weeks to think up and make.  But I’m slowly learning that self-doubt is part of the creative process and it’s something I have to keep working through.

With that in mind, I try and surround us all with inspiration to keep the ideas flowing. This could be something as simple as browsing through magazines, taking a trip to the shops, trying a new recipe or attending events that spark your imagination. So when Wild Child Festivals  – a festival that celebrates and encourages creativity – got in touch (through my work with mothers & shakers) I was excited to partner with them and I’ve also got a family* ticket to giveaway.

I made this baby’s breath flower garland diy to share with you because Wild Child Festivals is a breath of fresh air as it’s the only family festival I know of that wholeheartedly celebrates creating in so many different ways and for so many different ages.

If you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to family festivals, you will want to check out Wild Child. It’s set outdoors in a beautiful part of London and offers 11 creative zones for kids and adults to make, create, learn, be inspired and have fun.

Materials:
babies breath (at least 15-20 stems)
florists wire
twine
scissors

Start by making mini bunches. To do this, cut off the stems that have flowers and secure 3-5 of these  together with florists wire. Trim any long stems, keeping the stems fairly short.  As you create the bunches, pop them in a small glass or vase with water, to keep them hydrated.

The number of mini bunches you need, will depend on the length of your garland.  As a rough guide, making 35-40 mini bunches which will create a garland measuring approx 1m or 40 inches.

Once you’ve made your mini bunches, get out your twine.  Lay the twine flat on a table (don’t cut yet) and start attaching each little bunch to the twine using florists wire. After attaching the first one, make sure the rest of the bunches are attached to the string as well as the stems of the bunch that came before it.  Keep going until you have about 3-5 little bunches left.  Now cut the string leaving plenty of extra at the end.

Hang up your garland. You’ll notice the stems are visible at the end where you placed your last bunch.  Carefully attach one more mini bunch over the stems. Finally if any areas are looking a bit bare, gently attach one or two more bunches as needed.

Here’s a short video tutorial:

This flower garland will last about 18-24 hours – I suggest spraying it with a bit of water 3-4 times in that time. However, babies breath looks pretty even when it’s wilting and drying out so once it’s past it’s freshness, hang it somewhere to dry and you can keep your garland for ages.

I made this flower garland diy for a recent gathering we had at home and not only did it look pretty, it smelled so good too.  Once it was past it’s freshness, I found it looked better as a table centrepiece rather than a garland so that’s what I’m using it as now.
