In the seaside village of in the East Hamptons, North America is a summer home by , which takes its name from its charming locale. Amagansett House has emerged from a considered architectural renovation with an allusion to its coastal context enhanced by the magical beauty of the beech, oak, maple and sycamore trees framed from every window.
Soaring raked ceilings washed in bleached natural light, refinished oak floorboards abutting soft white walls, Douglas-fir joinery curated with matte white stone benchtops, teak and Accoya wood; these are the design sentiments that imbue a serene calm throughout Amagansett House. Unified by the shadow play of light that shines through the surrounding forest branches, the summer home is a neutral, airy place where the seasonal changes in its wooded landscape outside poetically influence ambience and the spirit of living.
The kitchen is an airy space defined by Douglas fir joinery by and creamy white stone benchtops.
Hugged by its wooded outlook, Amagansett House is balanced by a textured white and pale timber palette with accents of black.
In translating the client’s direction to create “a bright and airy feel, a space that felt beachy without being too literal,” Studio Fauve has realised a summer home that intuitively harnesses a sense of place. A relationship with the beach has been infused into the aesthetic through sandy tones and materials and unfussy styling aligned to low-maintenance weekend habitation. Native colours and textures pay direct homage to the woodland setting; soft furnishings cohesively draw on the sage foliage, blue sky and earthy spectrum of mustards and bark tones.
Studio Fauve was in charge of the interior design and the architectural renovations of the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home. The construction included refinishing the floors, painting the entire space, redoing the bathrooms and kitchen entirely, and selecting new furniture and lighting for the whole space.
A unique selection of materials come together to provide warmth while keeping the palette muted and light, such as Tadelakt plaster and teak in the primary bathroom, Douglas Fir in the kitchen, and Accoya wood in the guest bathroom.
The formal dining space features the C603 Chairs originally designed by Yuzuru Yamakawa in 1958.
A play on tactile elements brings warmth and cosy resonance to the living space where deep pile rugs and raw natural fibres beckon, tempered by the black contemporary sophistication for .
The is informed by soaring ceilings, white textures and blonde timbers which echo the coastal Hamptons locale.
Through graceful gestures – a lack of adornment, clean architectural forms and highly resolved design details – the house takes on an atmosphere of authenticity and timelessness. The interiors also reflect an understanding of the home’s purpose as a place to decompress from the client’s primary residence in New York City.
Throughout its various elements, Amagansett House is informed by the artisanal. Monolithic and beautifully imperfect plaster vanities complement sculptural side tables and lamps in serene alabaster and rich terracotta tones. Handmade tiles and knotted timbers carry stories of different times in different forms, a sentiment deeply adopted by Studio Fauve.
The bathroom features a woven pendant light by Ay Illuminate above the freestanding bath.
Often it is the most natural of creative outcomes that are the most elusive and Amagansett House is a testament to this notion. Throughout the seamless collection of its spaces is an overarching clarity that is simultaneously raw and refined.
Amagansett House abides by the knowledge that our surroundings heavily influence our mood. Studio Fauve has tapped into just the right negotiation between shelter and the heavy alliance with nature that defines a summer house. The resonance of the artisanal is offset by the black sophistication of contemporary touches, the deep relationship between interior and exterior, and the fundamental importance of cultivating a sense of place.
