Yarn Decor for the Holidays by Two of Wands

Got bits and bobs left over from making all of your knit and crochet holiday gifts? I always try to repurpose my scraps and partial skeins so that nothing goes to waste, and what better way then to use them for holiday decor and gift wrapping?! Over the last few weeks I’ve shared my favorite ways to use yarn for ornaments and gift wrapping, and I even filmed several tutorials to show you exactly how I do it. I compiled all of the content into this blog post so you can easily access all of the info and links to the materials I used. I’ve also rebooted and refreshed my crochet Everlasting Snowflakes pattern and my knit Winter Essentials Ornaments pattern for the season!

Wrapping gifts is one of my favorite things to do. I love packaging up something meaningful and putting in the extra effort to make the whole experience of receiving and opening the gift that much more special for the recipient. My younger sister even asks me to wrap most of her gifts each year, haha. Whether you’re a knitter or crocheter or neither, there are so many ways to use yarn to make ornaments and add a special touch to your gifts. I usually whip up a bunch of tassels, pompoms, snowflakes, and mini knit ornaments to use both on the tree and to top my gifts.

I constantly get asked how I make my tassels so I finally filmed this tutorial to show you exactly how I do it! These are great for year-round accents on knit and crochet garments, keychains, home decor, party decor, etc, but also perfect for use as holiday ornaments and gift accents.

One of the easiest yarn decor options for the holidays is the pompom. Large or small, these are also useful for year round projects but extra special this time of year due to their resemblance of snowballs. There are many ways to make pompoms using tools specially designed to make them or just household items. My favorite way to make mini pompoms is with a fork!

While you may have lots of scraps left over to use for these pieces, you can also pick up odds and ends and extra supplies from Michaels to include with them. I found these wooden rings there that I used to make some fun macrame-style ornaments. These can also be tied on to gifts or repurposed as keychains!

I usually also grab a few skeins of sparkly yarn from Michaels like Lion Brand Yarn Shawl in Ball (the color called Cleansing Quartz is my favorite!). Another yarn I’ve always loved for holiday decor is Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Glamour. I used that this year, along with Wool-Ease, Wool-Ease Thick & Quick, and 24/7 Cotton to create a ton of snowflakes using my crochet Everlasting Snowflakes pattern.

I designed these snowflakes back in 2015 and I have made SO many over the years. I attach one to almost every gift I give and they always put a smile on the recipients’ faces. You can purchase the pattern for my Everlasting Snowflakes here.

If you’re not a crocheter, I also have knit holiday pattern called the Winter Essentials Ornaments. These are great for tree trimming and adorning gifts as well. My favorite is the little “scarf in progress” using these Clover Bamboo Marking Pins as needles.

Aside from individual ornaments and gift toppers, yarn is also great in place of ribbon to use for wrapping gifts. I filmed my two absolute favorite ways to wrap presents for you this year, and I’m so excited to see some of you already sharing your take on these on social media. Check out the videos below to make your gifts really stand out.
