Where to spend your home furnishings budget

When you buy a new home, you’re faced with the task of furnishing it. Particularly if you are moving into your first home, you probably don’t have much in the way of furnishings. It can be very expensive to furnish a whole home at once. Before you head to the furniture store, it’s important to take stock of where you can save money. What do you need? Where can you save? Where should you splurge? Here, we’ll give you a rundown of where you can afford to save your pennies and where you should perhaps try to shell out a bit more if you can.

The dining room

The most important thing to consider when deciding how to furnish your home is how you really live. The rooms that get the most use should get the most attention. For example, if you plan on using a formal dining room for meals, it’s probably worth your while to invest in a good dining set. Dining tables and chairs that are used regularly have to withstand lots of wear and tear, and because of that, it’s a good idea to buy a good-quality one. When shopping, look for chairs that are good and sturdy (go ahead – sit on them!) and a table that is equally strong. If you plan to entertain often, you may want to opt for a table that has a removable leaf, that way you can save space when you need to and have the extra room as necessary.

The bedroom

We spend a third of our lives sleeping. So, it stands to reason that we should want to make as many of those sleeps as good as they can be, right? Here is another place where you will want to spend some money. Purchase a good mattress from a reputable source, such as from this website. Whether coil or latex, the important thing is to choose a sturdy, well-made mattress that is comfortable for you. The frame is one area where you can save a few dollars, but the mattress should be a priority for your budget allotment. A good mattress will impact your health and overall wellbeing, so don’t pinch pennies in this department.

The living room

How much time do you spend on your couch? If you’re like most people, you spend more time than you’d care to admit curled up on your couch, binge-watching some TV show or other. Just like your dining set, your couch gets a lot of use, so invest a bit of money here, too. Look for a couch that is not only comfortable (which is subjective) but also durable and resistant to stains. This is especially important if you have, or plan to have, children. Choose a couch that has legs that are screwed into the body, not glued on or, better yet, a couch in which the legs are a part of the body. Avoid couches with frames that are held together with glue or staples; they won’t offer you the longevity or durability that you will need.

That being said, if you have more than one living area in your home (a living room and a basement, for example) you can save money on furniture for the lesser-used room and invest in sturdier pieces for the room you use most often.

When you buy a new home, you can quickly become overwhelmed with the prospect of having to pay for all of the expenses that come along with moving and furnishing the home. However, when you prioritize those expenses and allot your funds first to the things you will use the most or that will have the biggest impact on your day-to-day life, things become more manageable.
