after being cooped up at home, eating unhealthy comfort foods, too many sweets, and just generally being sloth-like the very charming ethicurean in bristol, england is probably at the top of my list to inspire me back into healthy eating — and a robust trip to the fresh air of the english countryside sounds dreamy, right? the ethicurean is a former victorian orangery turned restaurant hidden away in the somerset countryside, serving up only the seasonal best and foraged ingredients from the idyllic landscape that surrounds it by brothers iain and matthew pennington. i really must visit this place — it looks like a place we all must make the journey to post-covid, doesn’t it? in the meantime, you can view some of their recipes featured on the modern house this week. it may still be summer but we’re headed off to jolly olde england where the weather can get cool, so we’re getting our fall gear together for this trip with some cozy layers — a cute v-neck cashmere sweater, a comfy black wrap, our favorite cuffed jeans (perfect for the country) and some great looking chelsea boots. on the flight over, i suggest reading Hotel du Lac by Anita Brookner — it tells the story of Edith Hope, a british woman who writes romance novels under a pseudonym. When her life begins to resemble the plots of her own novels, however, Edith flees to Switzerland, where the quiet luxury of the Hotel du Lac promises to restore her to her senses but instead of peace and rest, Edith finds herself sequestered at the hotel with an assortment of love’s casualties and exiles — such a fun, juicy read.
