when travel is a good idea again, one city that could use our love is new orleans — between covid and hurricanes they’ve taken a brutal beating. this week’s wear this there is taking us on a weekend getaway to a NOLA renovation ripe for a visit — the drifter. revamping retro motels is all the rage and i’m very alright with that — they start with great mid-century modern bones and build from there. With a name inspired by the Beat Generation, this modernized nostalgic hotel is a playful respite from New Orleans’ expected offerings, shining a light on a newly hip side of the city by acting as a melting pot for the local and global “drifters” who end up there. we’re thinking comfy, but it is new orleans, after all, so let’s step up your game with a fun, but sexy black jumpsuit, layered up with a very feminine blouse beneath, and paired with some great looking black boots for traipsing through well-worn bourbon street. for daytime, throw that top over a pair of our favorite high-rise jeans and add a great hat. don’t forget your favorite sunnies and one-piece swimsuit for hanging poolside and should you need a good read, how about trying Coming Through Slaughter? the author of the english patient, Michael Ondaatje brings to life the fabulous, colorful panorama of New Orleans in the first flush of the jazz era in his always lyrical and beautiful prose.
