Multi-award winning Sydney furniture designer Tom Fereday joins forces with the Art Gallery of New South Wales to craft a highly contextual guest seating collection.

With previous brand collaborations, including Louis Vuitton, Alessi and Kvadrat Maharam, Tom Fereday unveils his latest bespoke furniture ensemble for one of Australia’s flagship museums, the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

After two years of collaboration, artisan Tom Fereday developed 35 bespoke ottomans and lounges for visitors to the gallery. Inspired by the building’s architecture, Tom explains, “The collection was formed through a shared goal of creating furniture designed to complement the incredible space and artwork.”

Tom’s work complements Sydney’s iconic art gallery without competing or distracting from the artworks on display. The designer’s quiet and refined approach allows his custom pieces to sit harmoniously in the gallery’s old and new areas.

Through Tom’s signature holistic approach, the design is sympathetic to the space and purpose of the gallery. “The collaboration acted as a celebration of Australian artisanship through both locally sourced materials and craftsmanship, with the final collection made entirely in Sydney,” Tom says.

Close inspection reveals a refined angular timber frame made from solid Australian spotted gum, accentuated with a fine aniline leather seat. “Each element is handcrafted by some of the finest makers in Australia,” Tom adds.

Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2021, Tom’s furniture installation forms part of a significant transformation for the Art Gallery of New South Wales scheduled for completion in 2022.
