Do you have a house move on your hands, and are you set to downsize? If that’s you, then read on!

There’s lots of reasons why people choose to downsize. For first home buyers, often a smaller apartment, unit or townhouse is the only type of property that is affordable. For others, like retirees, the prospect of a smaller place with less upkeep is really appealing. Others still trade off the perks of an inner-city location for size. Whatever the reason, moving to a smaller pad can be a bit of a shock, especially if you’re used to a larger space. So, that’s why we’re going to share some tips and tricks with you that will help you adjust easily.

Cull With Impunity

Sorry to break it to you, but you’re going to need to get rid of some stuff. Quite a bit of stuff, depending on the size difference between your old and new place, of course. So, before calling in the removalists in Melbourne, go through your stuff and make some hard decisions about what you want to keep and what can go to the op shop or the tip.

Clothes are a common offender here – how many coats, shirts or pairs of pants do you have that haven’t seen the light of day in over a year? As a rule of thumb; if you haven’t worn something in over a year, you don’t really need it. Another bulky collection of items (sorry bookworms!) that can be culled is your library. Go on and share the literary love and donate a portion of your books to another avid reader or a community centre. If you aren’t feeling charitable then you could…

Make Some Money!

Did you know that people on the internet are ready and willing to give you their hard-earned cash for items that you no longer want or need? Websites like Gumtree offer a free classified service, with the option to pay a little bit to boost your ads. Even Facebook has jumped on the online-selling bandwagon and the Facebook Marketplace is a great way to earn some extra dosh. So any items that you don’t have room for in your new place could be earning you some much-needed currency, especially if you’ve got a mortgage.

Invest in Storage…or Get Inventive

One of the tricky aspects of moving to a smaller dwelling is that storage is often limited. You often won’t have the luxury of walk in robes, expansive cupboards and large pantries. That’s why it’s a great idea to invest in some neat storage solutions. Chances are you’ll be able to find ways and means of tucking away your must-have items. And the second aspect of this tip is to get inventive and use every square inch of space you can find. Do you have space under your beds? Pop in some drawers on wheels – you can use these to store your linen, and your blankets during the summer months. Space on top of cupboards? Perfect! Grab some tubs and pop your seldom-used-but-essential cookware in them. Cube storage is also a great idea and space-saver.

Enjoy Your New Space

Whatever your reasons for downsizing, make sure to make your new digs feel like home and enjoy living there. But before you get there, consider a thorough cull. Sort through your stuff and decide what to keep and what to give away, or sell to make some spare dough. Invest in some clever storage solutions for the possessions that you just can’t bear to part with, and make sure to make the most of the space that you do have.
