Reflecting a European elegance, The Thomas boutique accommodation in St Kilda embodies a sophisticated, yet homely aesthetic thanks to stylist studio The Specified’s hand-selected collection of artwork, objects and refined furniture and finishes.

Founder of The Specified Vange Markou reconnected with an old client after six years, however, this time around saw Vange and her team fitting out two apartments, both within the same landmark building and both forming a boutique ‘home-away-from-home’ accommodation project.

As a set of short-term stay, two-bedroom apartments in Melbourne’s St Kilda locale, the design intent behind The Thomas project was to create an elegant interior across both apartments that resonated with discerning and design orientated guests. The client behind the project have a sharp eye for design and their keenness to invest in key pieces had remained unchanged- traits shared with Vange.

Offering a bespoke selection of artisanal brands from across the globe, The Specified presents a tightly curated collection of designs that encompass refined finishes including objects, art, furniture and fittings. As curators of design and agents of style, The Specified’s values lie in their utmost integrity for design and authenticity above all else. Their core belief straddles ‘skilled craftsmanship and considered design’ which they feel are integral to a well-resolved project; The Thomas is a showcase of just that. Like many projects, it wasn’t without its challenges, The Specified were given just a few weeks to measure, select, procure and bring The Thomas apartments to life.

The beautiful building housing the apartments has a heritage which was deeply rooted in a generational family tailoring business. and the apartments complete with black steel framed windows and high ceilings was outdated and lacking any soul. So Vange and her team set about injecting a sense of warmth, individual style and timeless quality across both open-plan apartments, each of which are named after two of the sons from the original tailoring business that lived here- ‘The Harry’ and ‘The Franklin’.

A foundational, neutral palette ensures key furniture pieces, artwork and lighting inject personality. Local artisan Articolo Lighting features prominently across both apartments which include several signature pieces each of which adds a feminine softness.

While The Franklin encompasses classics including No 811 Hoffmann Thonet dining chairs which are set around a Four Rectangular Dining Table by Kartell, a modern Shanghai Tip Sofa with matching side table and pouf by Moroso adds texture as well as tactility and comfort. The Harry apartments more compact space is reflected by smaller footprint items including the round Container Dining Table by Moooi surrounded by Flow Dining Chairs by MDF Italia and Le Bombole Sofa B&B Italia.

Artwork by prominent artists Nick Horan, Susan Knight and Sophia Szilagyi add a considered dimension inside each apartment and ensure both spaces feel more like private space home rather than a hotel room.

The Thomas apartments speak volumes about the expertise of The Specified and their art for cultivating a layered, lived in aesthetic. We’re looking forward to seeing what Vange and her team do next.
