As we wind down 2017 and welcome 2018, we’re taking a moment to reflect on some of our favourite spaces of the past year with four roundup features over the coming holiday period.

First up, we head to the beach (where else would you want to be this time of year, after all) to revisit five very different coastal homes that caught our eye – and yours – for another look. Each is strikingly unique, beautifully designed and expertly executed; perhaps one will even inspire your own coastal home project….

Spaces of Calm with Pamela Makin | est living

The Bungan Beach home of designer and Les Interieurs owner Pamela Makin is like no other coastal home we’ve seen. Eschewing convention in palette, fitout and aesthetic, Makin has curated a space that truly reflects and responds to its environment, making for a calming and restorative space. After all, when you have views like this, why bother crowding them?

It may look like a timber block from the outside, but this Point Lonsdale home by InForm Design is anything but ordinary. Working with split levels to create communal and private spaces (not to mention a hefty amount of entertaining space), the designers have created a truly modern Australian coastal retreat – the type that appeals to a weekender stay or an ongoing home base.

Had you asked us where we’d find our favourite coastal homes at the beginning of this year, we doubt Poland would have been on the list. But after coming across this light, bright and breezy coastal home from local studio Loft Kolasinski, Miedzyzdroje is now firmly on our ‘must visit’ list. By stripping the villa back to its original 1920s foundations and updating it with whitewashed brick walls and timber flooring, the studio have created a space that feels akin to the Mediterranean, yet has its own eclectic identity.

Mim Design give us plenty to admire in this family holiday home on the Mornington Peninsula – but we have to admit it’s all about the material palette for us. The soft palette of grey, pebble, ivory, pumice and black plays out across the interiors, deftly matched with textural finishes such as super soft knotted wool carpets, slatted timber wall panels and veneer shelving, powder-coated door handles and oh-so-smooth stone benchtops.  Almost too nice to share with the little ones, we think!

Designed by Madeleine Blanchfield Architects, this Clovelly home took inspiration from an unlikely source -specifically a lithograph print owned by the residents. With creativity and craftsmanship, the design not only subtly evokes the artwork but expresses it in tandem with the surrounds; embracing the ocean views, opening up canopies to draw in more light and, just like the artwork, offering a deeply personal reflection of the owners themselves.
