As temperatures take a dive here in Australia, we’re turning our attention to keeping cosy with style always at front of mind. While some may mourn the end of long summer days and balmy summer nights, we here at est HQ are fully ready to embrace the hibernating phase of the year – assuming hibernating includes a great book (or Netflix binge), warm drink and en pointe space to cosy up in.

The core feature of such a space would have to be a roaring fireplace, just beckoning for you to pull up an armchair and luxuriate next to. Fortunately we’ve been doing some hunting through our own archives and preferred products to bring you the best of the bunch – whether it be inbuilt or freestanding, modern or traditional, we’re sure there’s a fireplace here to fit your interior aesthetic.

Simply Steel

This simple inbuilt fireplace in the Beatty Avenue home by Jost Architects is rustic without looking dated, minimal without seeming diminutive. It’s a great way to use a fireplace as a highlight feature without overwhelming the rest of the space – we suggest a steel inset fire like the Riva by Stovax for a similar look.

Gyrofocus Pivoting Fireplace

A seminal Dominique Imbert design, this suspended fireplace has become a statement piece in contemporary design. Revolutionary for its technical design and groundbreaking style, we continue to see this piece pop up in many a modern home. Just make sure you have a tall ceiling and space for this piece to stand out – you’ll want to highlight its beauty.

Fashionably French

Take your cues from the stylish Ceminees Philippe with a classic French design like the Radiante 873. With a traditional look, it’s the perfect foil for both rustic and modern materials. The double opening door system means you can have either a roaring open fire or a slow combustion heater as you like.

Argos by Invicta

This freestanding, slender fireplace takes some inspiration from the traditional Scandinavian masonry heaters, explored with a sleek modern style. Cast Iron Elegance

We like the cabin-like feel these little stoves create – but don’t be deceived by their size, things will definitely heat up quickly. Our pick from the pack is the Rockport by Lopi, for its energy efficiency and classic shape.

An Oxygen Fireplace

We love an open fire place for both its heat and its wood cracking noise. There is nothing better to swarm up against a roaring open flame, and if we had to pick our favourite setting it would have to be a little on the indulgent side, like this incredible bedroom with its sprawling open fireplace design.

Made of Bricks

Yes it’s the traditional way but it doesn’t have to be boring. We love the colourful details of this brick inbuilt fireplace in the Point Lonsdale home by InForm Design. Large enough to spread out in front of without crowding the space, the brickwork in this design plays nicely against the greys of the cement block and furniture. As for the fireplace itself, we would recommend a larger open wood fireplace like the Universal Inserts by Jetmaster.
