What is it?

Like its counterpart solid wood flooring, engineered wood is made from 100% real wood; it’s just constructed differently. You see, engineered wood flooring is made up of anything between 3 and 12 layers of plywood which are then cross layered, glued and pressed together to form a really strong bond, the more layers that the plank has, the tougher it will be.

What are the benefits?

There was once a time where engineered wood flooring looked pretty shabby, in fact it almost represented a really cheap laminate. But over recent years we have seen manufacturers really turning it around and offering flooring that looks just like solid wood flooring.  We think it’s safe to say that engineered wood flooring has all the benefits of solid wood flooring without the worry of maintaining it or breaking the bank. It looks similar, feels similar but comes at a much lower price and thanks to the clever construction method mentioned earlier, engineered wood flooring has great stability; which means that it can remain consistent even when conditions change. By conditions, we mean things such as moisture levels or temperatures, which is something that happens a lot in rooms like the kitchen or bathroom. In these instances, solid wood floor would expand and contract causing the boards to create gaps as well as them bowing.  Due to the many layers in the flooring, engineered wood is incredibly durable making it ideal for a busy home with heavy footfall.

Not only is engineered wood flooring practical, it’s also really versatile and comes in a variety of designs, whilst remaining much cheaper than solid wood. There are so many different species and grades available meaning that you can create the perfect look for your home without having to take out a second mortgage.

Although engineered wood is durable we know that nothing is indestructible, so it is good to know that it can be sanded and refinished if necessary. The number of times that it can be sanded does depend on the thickness of the top layer but it definitely can be sanded at least once during its lifetime. Re sanding the floor is great if you have any surface stains or marks that have accumulated over the years, it will bring the floor back to life and look as good as new! Once it has been sanded again you can also refinish it, which also allows you to completely change the look of the floor should you wish to do so! Engineered wood flooring is also compatible with under floor heating; in fact, it is probably one of the best options on the market to accompany it.

So, if you are looking to upgrade your home it is worth knowing this. Although, by its own standards engineered wood flooring is a fantastic insulator and can bring a lot of warmth into the room that it is installed in.

Finally, if you fancy yourself as a bit of a dab hand when it comes to DIY then you will be glad to know that engineered wood flooring is one of the easiest floors to install yourself. Due to the style of the joints on the boards they can be laid without the use of glue or nails, which means less mess for you and a neater floor in the end!

So, there you have it, the start to finish guide of why us guys at Luxury Flooring think Engineered Wood Flooring is one of the best options on the market right now!
