A fusion of oriental and commercial chic, in this alpine retreat near Queenstown’s Lake Hayes clean lines, natural materials and bold shapes are king. Traditional Japanese sliding screens separate the kitchen from an informal dining/lounge area and are juxtaposed by the pastry and chef’s islands’ heavy-duty powdercoated steel legs. An unapologetically commercial stainless steel extractor is suspended above the chef’s island, at one end of which is a cantilevered teppanyaki grill mounted in Caesarstone to match the island’s work surface.
Although many of this kitchen’s functional elements are hidden behind soft-close doors and panels, the owners also wanted a feature wall, which takes the form of a glass-fronted display cabinet that helps to distract the eye from two pantry areas, one a plumbed and fully equipped butler’s pantry. Another favourite element in this kitchen is the self-contained coffee-making zone with a sweeping view that takes in the Remarkables range.

Part of a Coromandel holiday home, this kitchen was intended to have the opposite look and feel to the minimalist kitchen in the owners’ main residence and allow large groups to be catered for. The resulting space is warm and welcoming, with earthy hues, materials and textures.
Stone benchtops and splashbacks form low-maintenance surfaces in a dwelling that could be vacant for long periods, and a space high on the back wall houses high- quality faux plants. Storage is provided for up to 10 guests’ holiday food, platters, wine and beer in the form of a scullery with tall storage and a large fridge and freezer. Day- to-day consumables are accommodated in the main kitchen, which also has a bar area for the preparation of coffee and other drinks.

+ Outstanding Renovation + Manufacturing Craftsmanship + Canterbury Chapter Kitchen Recognition
Fisher & Paykel; Harvey Norman Commercial; Burns & Ferrall; Artisan Stone
A family-friendly, L-shaped space reoriented to obtain clear sight lines to the garden and pool beyond, this kitchen is in keeping with the early 1900s architecture of the rest of the home. A strong feature of the design is the central cook zone with its custom-made steel rangehood, which sets the stage and links to the prep and wash zones. The adjacent pantry houses hidden appliances, including dual fridges, all integrated to reinforce the classic detailing.
Traditional cabinetry, chrome nickel cup handles and knobs, off-white joinery, engineered benchtops and oiled rimu floors provide a backdrop for the central island. With its intricate inlaid stained-oak top, this provides storage, while the front overhang creates room for informal seating.
Cabinetry Prime Panels American white oak veneer in Resene Black White. Island doors American white oak and American white oak veneer waxed with a mid tint. Drawers Blum and stained American white oak. Handles Armac Martin Bakes & Co pulls and Armac Martin knobs. Benchtop HanStone Aurora Snow.
