In an effort to practice what I preach around here, I present a summer-friendly crochet project you can make in a single sitting. (My favorite kind of summer yarn make!) Gosh darn it, summer might just be the best time to whip up a quick-to-make project with yarn, despite what wooly-focused logic might dictate. 😉 All you need to make these adorable pillows is super bulky yarn, a crochet hook, and some stuffing. Gather those supplies, your favorite summer drink, and settle in on the nearest patio – you’ll have yourself a pillow by the time you need to get up again!

The Sun & Flower Pillows are awesome because you only need to know basic crochet stitches and construction to make them. (Psst, fans of the series on this blog will love a large-scale take on the style of construction I used for those!) It’s just a matter of crocheting two circles, joining them with an edging, and stuffing as you please. So easy, but sometimes the simplest construction yields the funnest results!

Sun & Flower Pillows – Crochet Pattern
Skill level: basic
Supplies
1-2 skeins of Berroco Macro yarn in 1-2 colors. See note below on color & quantity requirements. Pictured colors: Snowy Owl Eyes (yellow), Marine (blue) & Puffin Beak (orange).
US S (19 mm) crochet hook
tapestry needle for weaving in ends
small pillow form, foam, or other material for stuffing
Abbreviations & Terms
rnd- round
magic ring- an adjustable starting round.
ch- chain
sc- single crochet
sl- slip
sc 2 in next st- sc 2 times in same st
rep from *- repeat the instructions following the asterisk as directed
(X sts)– X is the number of sts that are now in the rnd
Clr A – color A (Pictured: Yellow for Sun Pillow, Orange for Flower)
Clr B – color B (Pictured: Blue for Flower Pillow, n/a for Sun)
Notes: Each pillow requires less than one total skein of to crochet. Two colors are required to make the flower option, which is where the “1-2 skeins of Berroco Macro yarn in 1-2 colors” comes in in the Supplies section of this pattern.
Gauge & Dimensions: Approx. 5 sc x 5.5 rows = 4 inches (10 cm). The center, stuffed circle of each finished pillow measures approx. 12 inches in diameter. Including the rays/petals, the finished pillows each measure approx. 18 inches in diameter, tip to tip. Full disclosure: These are a home decor project and I’m lazy, so I opted not to wet block these. As such, the listed finished measurements & gauge were measured sans blocking.
THE PATTERN
Center Circle – Make 2.
If you’re making a sun, make two circles of the same color.
If you’re making a flower, make one circle in Clr A and one in Clr B.rnd 1. Form a magic ring. Ch1 & sc 6 into ring, sl to join into rnd. Pull tail to tighten loop. (6 sts)
rnd 2. ch1, *sc2 in same st, sc2 in next 5 sts, sl to join. (12 sts)
rnd 3. ch1, sc1 in same st, sc2 in next st, *sc1, sc2 in next st; rep from * 5 times, sl to join. (18 sts)
rnd 4. ch1, sc1 in same st, sc1, sc2 in next st, *sc2, sc2 in next st; rep from * 5 times, sl to join. (24 sts)
rnd 5. ch1, sc1 in same st, sc2, sc2 in next st, *sc3, sc2 in next st; rep from * 5 times, sl to join. (30 sts)
rnd 6. ch1, sc1 in same st, sc3, sc2 in next st, *sc4, sc2 in next st; rep from * 5 times, sl to join. (36 sts)
rnd 7. ch1, sc1 in same st, sc4, sc2 in next st, *sc5, sc2 in next st; rep from * 5 times, sl to join. (42 sts)
rnd 8. ch1, sc1 in same st, sc5, sc2 in next st, *sc6, sc2 in next st; rep from * 5 times, sl to join. (48 sts)Break yarn and weave in ends.
Rays/Petals
Hold both circles together, wrong sides facing. If making a Flower, hold your circles with Clr A facing you. Join yarn (Clr B if petals; Clr A if rays), inserting hook through back loop of Clr A circle’s loops & both Clr B loops.rnd 1. Ch1, sc1 in same st, hdc1, dc1, ch1, *dc1, hdc1, sc2, hdc1, dc1, ch1; rep from* 6 times total.
For the remainder of the rnd, you’ll only be working through the back loop of the front circle. This will create an opening for stuffing the pillow later. Finish crocheting the rnd (working only through the back loops of the front circle):
dc1, hdc1, sc2, hdc1, dc1, ch1, dc1, hdc1, sc1, sl to join into rnd.
rnd 2. ch1, sc1 in same st, sc1, hdc1, dc1, ch1, *dc1, hdc1, sc1, sl1, sc1, hdc1, dc1, ch1; rep from * 7 times total, dc1, hdc1, sc1, sl to join.
Break yarn and weave in ends.
Finishing
Block pillow covers (optional). Stuff pillow as you prefer. (I cut some foam into the appropriate size circle, and then cut that in half to be inserted in to the pillow, one half at a time.)
