Scandinavian Christmas tree

Scandinavian Christmas decor ideas

It’s not secret that I’m a big fan of Scandinavian decor which I’ve embraced throughout my home.  I’m guessing since you’re here, you’re a fan too.  So today I want to share some Scandinavian Christmas decor ideas that are so cozy and festive

The Scandi’s do Christmas in a simple and beautiful way.  Much like the rest of their decor, Christmas decor is never over the top in any way.  Instead it’s all about embracing the concept of lagom.  In case you haven’t heard it before, lagom is a Swedish word which means ‘just the right amount’.  This concept is used throughout Scandi decor and Christmas time is no exception.  So if you want to get the warm, calm and stylish Scandi Christmas look in your home, these ideas are for you.

stick to neutrals

For some Christmas is all about bright lights and even brighter colours.  But if you want to decorate for Christmas the Scandi way, neutrals are what you want.  Opt for lots of white, grey, beige and some pops of black to create a contrast.  Or you could even keeps things more pared back with a mainly white colour scheme.

bring the outdoors in

Scandi homes always have lots of plants and natural materials but at Christmas time there’s even more inside.  Aside from the Christmas tree, there are lots of ways to bring the outdoors in with things like wreaths, garlands, branches, pinecones and more.  One of my favourites is eucalyptus which not only looks great but makes your home smell so good too.

use cosy textures (and lots of it!)

You’ve seen those Nordic homes that look so warm and cosy at Christmas time right?  The key is lots of textures.  Textures are very much a part of Scandinavian interiors and Christmas time is no different.  If anything, you can up the cosiness at Christmas time.  Think things like sheepskin rugs, chunky wool throws, faux furs, natural baskets and soft linens.  The only thing to remember here is to stick to your neutral colours.

do a little DIY

DIY is satisfying and it’s a big part of a Scandinavian Christmas.  When you see Scandi homes decorated for Christmas you’ll always see things like a handmade wreath, simple DIY advent calendars, homemade paper decorations, DIY napkin rings and much more.  There are lots of simple DIY festive things you can make to add that handmade touch to your Christmas.

add some mood lighting

Lighting is another key element of Scandinavian interiors and at Christmas time it’s perfect to introduce some soft, moody lighting with candles, fairy lights and paper lanterns.  Candles especially are a big part of Scandi Christmas decor and not just on the dining table but all around the home.  Fairy lights and paper lanterns both add to mood lighting and keep things looking very cosy.

keep your gift wrapping natural and neutral

If you’re planning to display your gifts under the tree, keep the wrapping simple.  Bright colours and hectic patterns are off the menu here!  Instead opt for neutral coloured paper like brown kraft paper, white or black paper perhaps with a simple geometric repeat pattern or no pattern at all.  Pair with some twine and/or some greenery and you’ll have the prettiest gifts!

decorate the tree simply

Firstly if you’re going for the Scandi Christmas look, a natural tree is always better than an artificial one.  Decorate your tree with soft, neutral coloured ornaments and/or natural wood ornaments.  Handmade paper ornaments are a great idea too.  Try and pick two to three different styles of ornament and stick to that.  Or you could opt for keeping it super simple by only adding a string of fairy lights to the tree.  And don’t forget to cover the tree stand – placing the tree in a natural basket is one option or you can use a tree skirt.  The secret is simplicity.  I keep using the word simple because that really is the key to getting that Scandinavian Christmas decor look which brings me to the next tip.

let go of perfection

This is probably the most important point of all.  The Scandi’s don’t tend to opt for perfection which is why their homes look effortlessly warm and inviting at Christmas.  For e.g. you won’t see a perfect looking Christmas trees or decorations displayed in perfect symmetry.  You will see things like a small tree placed on a kitchen counter or a wreath placed off centre on a wall.   There’s nothing too planned or formal about their Christmas decor.  It’s all about creating a natural, organic, flowing  look by decorating with simplicity in mind.  In other words it’s about going with your instinct and not overthinking anything.
