When we , we learned of the designer’s constant quest to simplify design. Fuelled by a Nordic sensibility, the designer’s mission was clear in their widely acclaimed ; a black clad, a-frame home in the mountainous region of Quebec.
The latest project to leave studio is the reconfiguration of an existing home in Outremont, Montreal. Designed by local architect Jean Ouellet in the 1960s, Residence du Rocher had always stood out from its neighbours because of its atypical shape. By honouring the home’s architectural bones and creating a seamless thread of old and new inside, APPAREIL architecture have ensured a unique family home keeps up with the needs of a new generation.
While built nearly sixty years ago, Residence du Rocher has remained contemporary in appearance. Characterised by angled facades that maximise the influx of light, the clients did not wish to alter the overall structure but instead, rethink how each space interacts within it.
The clients requested an open plan layout, so APPAREIL architecture removed the ground floor’s partitions for a consistent view to the rear. This has allowed for increased fluidity within the home and a welcoming atmosphere, letting family informally gather at the custom marble and steel kitchen island or in the neighbouring dining space.
Residence du Rocher is a tapestry of natural materials in a variety of finishes, from the exposed stone staircase, to the timber cabinetry, slate, terrazzo and marble. APPAREIL Architecture worked hard to source elements from local artisans, such as the tailor-made cabinetry, and chairs and brass lighting fixtures from , made to order in their Montreal workshop. The home also showcases APPAREIL Architecture’s own product design work, with their matt black , manufactured in Montreal.
Through Residence du Rocher, APPAREIL Architecture have captured the thriving design community in Montreal. Sewn together by the work of local craftsman, the home reflects its architectural history while shaping a new era of design collaboration.
