Hey there Remodelaholic readers! Dawn here, from AD Aesthetic, and I’m back this month with another reader question mockup to hopefully inspire some creative ideas for your outdoor space. If you’ve missed any of my past mockup posts, you can always see all my posts here.

If you follow Remodelaholic on Facebook, you’ve probably seen several of the reader questions that are submitted every month. Each month, I choose one reader submitted photo to offer my suggestions on, and I create a Photoshop mock up of what I would do if I were in your shoes! Real Life Rooms: Two Story Curb Appeal

First though, my disclaimer: While I can recommend ideas that I think look nice, I have never seen this house in real life and don’t have accurate measurements. I am also not an architect or landscaper and do not know the planting recommendations for your area- I just like to make things look nice. I can’t guarantee that any of the items I put in my ‘virtual’ design will actually work in real life (or that they’ll fit your design style for that matter), and this is not intended to be a professional design consultation. So think of this as a just-for-fun rendering that hopefully gets your wheels turning and provides some inspiration!

On to the fun!

Before | Adding curb appeal to a two story home

READER QUESTION from Rachel — I would love some suggestions for curb appeal on our house. We bought it last summer and haven’t touched the outside yet. I don’t know where to start!

This home has a beautiful colonial style to it, so I wanted to play that up by focusing on the symmetry of the house.

Inspiring Two Story Curb Appeal

First though, I gathered some inspiration photos to get my wheels turning:

Sufficiently inspired, I got down to work. Here’s what I came up with to give this home exterior a dramatic makeover:

After | Adding curb appeal to a two story home

It doesn’t even look like the same house, right?? But I swear it is, and the updates I made don’t even involve any structural remodels. Here’s what I did:

Adding Curb Appeal to a Two Story Home

The dark porch was the main offender in my eyes. Those skinny, all-brick columns were giving the whole house a dated look that wasn’t my favorite. To remedy this, I would beef up the porch columns, making the bottom portion a more substantial size, but using the same brick color. For the top, a clean white pillar instantly updates the porch. Add in a pretty white porch railing, and the house is already more inviting.

With the addition of white columns, the dark windows and gutters were really standing out. Updating these to a more traditional white, with a classic double hung style for the windows, really emphasizes the colonial bones of the house and brightens everything up.

From there, I stuck with the classic color palette and updated the shutters to black, while removing the oversized shutters around the front door for a cleaner look. A fresh coat of paint for the main house in a creamy neutral, a new black door with fresh white molding, and some large eye-catching porch lights brings the color scheme together.

The final touch was a new, shaker style roof to add a bit of natural tone back into the design. I followed that up by incorporating a variety of plants in primarily symmetrical plantings, and the house was complete.
