Designing a multilayered and functional space can be a challenge at the best of times, but Alwill and garden designer William Dangar and his team have done just that. Transforming a dated backyard pool area, the team have created a space that not only acts as a relaxing place of retreat but as the rooftop of an outdoor pavilion. Embracing the tranquility of its surrounds, the pool pavilion is no ordinary backyard pool. Nestled alongside a Sydney river, this outdoor space takes family recreation to a whole other level.

The brief was simple – design and transform this family’s backyard pool into a private and serene escape. All hands on deck were required for this project, which saw the seamless collaboration between Alwill and garden designer Will Dangar and his team. Taking advantage of the sloping site, the pool was placed to perch out above the river, integrating the built structures to the natural landscape and providing breathtaking views. On the level below, a private studio offers a secluded hideout and place for guests to stay.

Designed mainly for swimming and leisure time, the pool platform makes space for interaction with the pool plus the opportunity to admire its picturesque surrounds at the same time. A curved sandstone wall separates the house and lawn, acting as a distinct barrier between the two. While this element defines the change in landscape, the spaces are connected by a walkway of steps, cleverly ensuring the spaces are both private yet easily accessible.

Raw materials have been used to effortlessly allow the structure to age with grace, disappearing into the rocks, trees and hillside. The understated palette allows the beauty of the landscape to  speak volume. Inside, the interior has a very similar composition. Raw concrete lines both the floor and walls offering a rustic yet polished backdrop. The combination of this minimal, pared back and refined aesthetic offers the family a platform to add their own layers and life to, all while enjoying their beautiful surrounds poolside.

Situated on the side of the pool is a succulent garden that offers an array of natural colour and character through its wide range of vegetation and plants.
