Mark your calendars for August 31 because big things are happening! I’ll be hosting my first KAL (Knit-Along) for my newest design, the Peace Hat (free pattern below or ad-free PDF here), and I’ll be offering a discount on all of my hat patterns until October 1st for a very special cause. Read on to find out what it is and how you can participate!

Being part of the Lion Brand family is one of my favorite parts of designing patterns. This company is constantly giving back, whether it’s donating over $1.7 million to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital through the sales of their Vanna’s signature yarn lines, partnering with Warm Up America and other charities to accept donations of handmade items, or donating yarn to countless causes. Their latest endeavor, which speaks perfectly to their mission of “creating a more colorful, connected, and giving world,” is their Hat Not Hate anti-bullying campaign.

Hat Not Hate Campaign

In this craftivist movement, makers are encouraged to create blue hats to wear proudly on World Bullying Prevention Day, October 1st, 2018 and share with the hashtag #HatNotHate to help raise awareness. Lion Brand is partnering with STOMP Out Bullying, the leading national anti-bullying and cyberbullying organization for kids and teens in the US and will be donating 2% of the proceeds of blue yarns during the campaign to the cause.

I’ve created this Peace Hat design as part of the campaign, and I’m offering the free pattern below and will be hosting a KAL (Knit-Along) starting August 31st with step-by-step photo and video support. The Peace Hat is a classic beanie-style toque with a special message. The blue base represents awareness and solidarity, while the hands illustrate peace between people of all backgrounds. The pompom made of all the colors is a symbol of us coming together in harmony and acceptance. Our differences are something to celebrate, not fear and use against each other. Wear your Peace Hat proudly on World Bullying Prevention Day, October 1, 2018, and share your projects with #HatNotHate.

Make sure to order your supplies now, listed in the free pattern below, so you can be ready for the KAL start on 8/31. Throughout the month of September, all of my PDF hat patterns will also be on sale to encourage everyone to take part in this important cause.

How can you take part?

1. Make a hat from any of my patterns using blue yarn (lots of options listed below).

2. Share a photo of you in your blue hat and hashtag #HatNotHate. Lion Brand and I will both be sharing select images.

3. Let people know you’re participating, and why. Encourage others to join in!

4. Donate blue hats to your local school and let them know what they stand for.

5. Wear your hat during October, which is Anti-Bullying Month, and encourage others to do so as well.

6. Join the Peace Hat KAL and share your progress on social media with the hashtags #HatNotHate and #PeaceHatKAL to spread awareness. You can sign up for updates on the KAL here: bit.ly/peacehatkalsignup

7. Donate hats back to Lion Brand by September 24th who will be gifting them to a local NY school for kids to wear on World Bullying Prevention Day, October 1st. Send hats to Lion Brand Yarn Co, Attn Shira Blumenthal HAT NOT HATE, 135 Kero Road, Carlstadt, NJ 07072

Peace Sign Colorwork:

Starting approx. 2”/5cm above ribbing, use duplicate stitch with the tapestry needle and the chart below to create a peace sign hand in one of the CC. Rep in other two CC approx. 3”/9cm above ribbing and .5”/1cm to the right and left of the middle hand.

Thread a length of MC onto tapestry needle and use an embroidery back stitch to free-hand the outline of the fingers using the chart below as a guide.

Pompom:

If using pompom maker, create pompom to desired fullness holding all four colors together.

To make by hand, cut a 12”/30.5cm piece of MC and with palm of hand facing you and fingers pointed up, drape the length between your middle and ring fingers. Holding all four colors together, wrap yarn around and around your four fingers to your desired fullness.

Bring the 12”/30.5cm length up and around the bundle, carefully slide the bundle off of your fingers, and tightly double knot the length around the center of the bundle so that it forms a bowtie shape.

Cut through all of the loops and, being careful not to cut the two tie ends, trim and shape the pompom until it is fluffy and rounded.

Using the two tie ends, secure the pompom to the top of the hat. Secure and weave in ends.
