Paper Empire is a Melbourne based studio that was born from the desire to offer beauty, function and an authentic creativity. Founded three years ago by Therese O’Donoghue and her partner, artist Stefan GeversPaper Empire sells art products to retail stores and online, but has a growing market with interior designers, architects and property stylists. Committed to originality and innovation, Paper Empire are keen observers of trends in art and design, but always follow their own design agenda. They print locally and with several local makers to create products that are of high quality. I met Therese when I travelled to Melbourne last year and was very happy that she got in touch recently to share their latest catalogue which launches today. Featuring 2017 work from Stefan Gevers, along with new Snowpuppe Lighting, Foto Factory and Foruu products, all are exclusive to Paper Empire. For today’s post I’m going to share the stunning new Colourfields collection by Stefan.

Consisting of a series of five prints based on original watercolour paintings referencing inner city, urban architecture and shipping ports, the block like forms melt into one another and evoke sensory reactions to tall city buildings, container ships and waterways. Stefan’s signature style of reducing and minimising forms to abstraction is beautifully tailored to this series.

A note about the artist:

Stefan Gevers was born in Enschede, The Netherlands and currently lives and works in Melbourne. Formally trained in The Netherlands, Stefan’s work typifies the creative and design style of his original homeland with his approach to minimalism and subtraction.

Stefan takes a contemporary approach to working with watercolour on paper but also works with acrylic on canvas and is known for his felt sculptures. His work is inspired by many road trips through country Australia. His latest trip to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia has resulted in a series of large scale watercolours. The form and textures of the landscape are ultimately reduced to a few but exact colour planes, resulting in a graphically-stylised painting.

Stefan is an award-winning artist with work acquired by the NAB Collection, State Library of Victoria and Queensland, Art Bank Australia and numerous private collections. Stefan has an extensive history in exhibiting his work nationally and internationally.

Colourfields is one of two collections by Stefan showcased in the 2017 catalogue. To see his second collection Goldenfields and the full range of new products on offer, take a look here
