I have the summer blues in all the right way with this week’s high slit dress look! I visited my friends over at not too long ago, you know them from (), and found one of the yummiest jerseys E.V.E.R.
I don’t know about you, but there are times when I don’t have a project in mind and I let the fabric tell me what to do. Most of purchases are that way and as a result, I end up with a shelved wall full of fabrics. Some people collect fabrics, I collect ideas. Don’t get me wrong, I always have every intention to make them – it’s why I invested but how can I keep up 4 kids running around the place? Which leads me to running away from home for mental checks, which usually takes me to a fabric store and I get inspired by all the bright vivid colors and textures of fabrics sold by the yard… that always end in purchases.
However, I promised myself to buy nothing this summer and only sew with what I have and it’s been awesome! Because this particularfabric needed to get out of the house and have some fun with me at the beach!
One of my favorite trends this summer, besides self tanner (which is awesome because I haven’t had color on my skin since my ), are SLITS. I love a good slit. You can enjoy the full length dress and still feel cool in the summer temps as if you were wearing something shorter with a slit dress or skirt!
And while that makes it hard to walk around a high slit when you are entertaining 4 babies at the beach, I noticed that I can play with the eye a little and give the illusion of a high slit and still retain a practical momma life style by lengthening the hemline.
If you haven’t guessed already, I used my tried and true pattern, but you can use any pattern to recreate this look! Just find your favorite shift dress, YUMMY FABRIC and let’s get started!
Materials:
- Dress Pattern of your choice (I used this),
- Fabric,
- Some pattern making paper, tape, pencil and paper scissors
Directions:
- Lay your pattern out and examine where the hemline to hit on you, mid calf? Knee?
- Decide how much length you want to take to the dress. This is a great time to ask a friend for help, but if you are friendless or working late at night, give yourself a little extra length. You can cut off fabric extras but you cannot add it.
- Retrace the front dress pattern onto your tissue pattern and add the extra length to your hem. Repeat for the back dress pattern.
- Now would be a great time to cement your slit length but if you don’t have anyone assisting you (like me,) you will need to guess. Luckily, if it’s wrong it’s easy to alter the finished garment at the end. Mark your dress pattern where you want you slit to start. You can add the slit to one side or do both like I did. Confession: I’ve never been a double side slit girl until n o w.
And It’s freaking fabulous!
- Sew the dress according to pattern instructions, remembering to stop sewing at the side slit markings. Try the dress on and double check slit placement.
- Once you like the slit details. Continue to hem your dress and that’s it! You are done!
I always go back to this pattern because it’s an easy sew. When it’s summer time, life gets kinda busy and sometimes, you need a quick sew. This dress is your start and done dress with three pattern pieces: front dress, back dress and sleeve. If you have some time this summer, I highly recommend this fun look!
