There’s no hiding we at est have a penchant for finding the ‘for sale’ signs in Stockholm. With their often minimal curation and stately foundations, we will never pass up the opportunity consider an abode in Sweden’s capital. When this small and mighty renovated Vasastan Apartment landed in our laps, our response was no different. Located in one of the city’s most idyllic neighbourhoods, stepping into this sought-after address is a leap into compact and considered Swedish living.

Enter the elegant world of a second-storey 1920s apartment on a quiet Vasastan street – proving smaller scale living can be big on benefits. Stitched together by original fishbone patterned oak parquet floor and segmented by steel-framed glass doors, what this apartment can’t provide in expanse, it makes up for in quality design. Custom details abound in the Terrazzo stone bench tops topped by Vola tapware, that also makes a welcome appearance in the bathroom. Intricate Flos Lighting ensures a warm and cosy feeling, juxtaposed with the blue and grey hues on the walls and in the soft furnishings.

When the weather is warm, you can open up the apartment onto the tree-lined street, with your own quaint balcony. Space-based solutions ensure there is ample room in the living areas and storage to hang your clothes, in the built in wardrobe. While you may have noted the absence of a place to wash your finery, this Vasastan apartment enjoys access to a large shared laundry and lounge at the basement of the five-storey building. And if there’s one thing we’ve learned – the Swedes have communal living down pat.

The area around the Vasatan apartment is largely residential, but certainly lives up to the Swedish ‘fika’ culture that’s all about enjoying a coffee and a sweet treat. Experience the fika tradition in one of many cafes, such as Cafe Pascal, which took out the prestigious Gulddrakek award for the best cafe in Stockholm. If you’re after some organic, locally sourced foods (day or night), we suggest you hit up the Gro restaurant. And for an extra-special bite to eat in the apartment’s locale, we recommend Agrikultur; a cosy setting of authentic Nordic cooking.

As a neighbourhood, Vasastan values heritage. Shopping in the district is an ode to the old, with an abundance of small stores and vintage shops. One the of the prominent historical sites is Observatorielunden, a 300-year-old former observatory, situated in landscaped garden that you won’t believe exists so close to the city centre. Vasastan is lucky to host Sven-Harry’s Art Museum – six storeys of the largest private collection of Nordic art pieces, furniture and carpets – and Carl Edhestar’s sculpture-filled Studio Museum. For the architecturally-minded, Stockholms Stadsbibliotek (Stockholm National Library) designed by renowned architect Gunnar Asplund is a famed landmark of the Stockholm’s stylish stronghold. In short, the neighbourhood is a hotbed of culture and creativity.
