Bringing a sense of luxury to the beach: this coastal home by local designer Sally Caroline exudes modern sophistication from the inside out.

Sitting just streets back from a secluded beach in one of our favourite spots along the Mornington Peninsula, 36 Lister Avenue Sorrento didn’t need to offer much more than its prime location to win us over. But in the hands of interior designer Sally Caroline, the design well and truly does its location justice, celebrating the beauty of the coastal landscape with a firm sense of contemporary elegance.

Intended as a home that can act as both a permanent residence or a city escape, the four bedroom house maximises the opportunities its north-facing location and panoramic views provide. An extensive 30-metre deck offers ample space for bay watching, sun-baking, summer BBQs and all manner of outdoor entertaining pursuits, while the gas-heated plunge pool and spa add an extra luxury. Inside, a similarly expansive glass façade looks out to the water, creating a soothing focal point for the inside living areas and the master bedroom. From morning sun to the soft twilight tones at dusk, natural light plays a starring role in the interiors of the home.

Caroline draws on a mixed materiality to reinforce a calm coastal aesthetic throughout the home. The exterior is characterised by timber and limestone, while inside a white on white palette sets the scene for light, timeless interiors with brass hardware, silver vein cut travertine and stone adding personality throughout. Standout features like the travertine open fireplace in the entertaining area and the stone bench top in the kitchen make a statement without overwhelming personal style; it’s easy to see how you could bring your own furnishings and art to make this home your own.

Beyond its obvious aesthetic appeal, Caroline has also ensured the home is well-equipped practically. Boasting a 7-star energy rating, hydronic heating, ducted air-conditioning and an oversized basement garage, the home is tailor-made for coastal living; right down to the ‘doggy shower’ to help keep the home sand free after puppies (or children) explore the nearby beaches. The layout is equally practical, with the two communal living areas separated by a central pad that cleverly houses a powder room, bar and storage. While the home is well-appointed with its four bedrooms, three bathrooms, laundry, study and multiple living areas, it doesn’t feel cluttered or ostentatious in size.

As for location, well what do we need to say? Just a few metres walk to Tideways Beach and the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club and a stone’s throw from the townships of Sorrento and Blairgowrie, the home offers an authentic, still untouched experience of beachside living. From the quiet beaches to the sweeping native trees and Port Phillip Bay views, this is a home to embrace the charms of coastal life, all while keeping things a little bit luxurious and uniquely beautiful.

“Moonas swaying and the seasons changing, the natural setting is forever an evolving art piece. The effect is a calm retreat, a city escape, a home to just be.”
